Different ways to spell "Annika"?

We want it pronounced "Ah-ni-ka" not "Ann-ni-ka". We can't agree on a spelling. The official Dutch way is Ahneke (ugly spelling, IMO). I've also seen Annika (I likey). Any other ideas? TIA!

Re: Different ways to spell "Annika"?

  • i can think of other ways to spell annika, but they would all look really silly.  go with the traditional spelling.  i like the dutch spelling ahneke - perhaps you could do ahneka????  eh, now that i see it spelled out, it doesn't look so good.

    stick with annika :)

good point.  people will hopefully be less inclined to call her anne-i-ka or anne-uh-ka, if there is one less 'n' in the name.

    anika is cute.

I've only ever seen it Annika, and I've only ever heard it pronounced AHN-ika, never ANN-ika.  "Anika" makes me think it's a different name and thus pronounced differently, and I'd think it was uh-NEEKA, which I don't think you want.

So I'd use the regular spelling.  You'll have to correct people no matter how you spell it, so go with the most familiar.

  • One N...Anika will likely get the prononciation that you want. 2 N's may get pronounced as ANN-i-kuh. That's how I would say it anyway!
  • Love the name, its on my short list!

I was going to go with Anika.  I liked "Ani" for a nickname.  I would hesitate for the double nn spelling for all the reasons stated before.

  • So you're wanting it pronounced like Monica without the "M" pretty much?

I've only ever heard Annika pronounced with ANN...

  • Annikah is my preferred spelling.

  • I love, love this name [Anika]!! If you want the name pronouned AH-ne-kah, the spelling is Anika.  It is a beautiful name, I do not care for annika as much.
  • A good friend growing up was dutch and she spelled it Anneke and it was pronounced "On-ika". We called her Ani for short.  Good luck!

  • Like Annika S?renstam ?  She is Swedish (famous pro golfer) and pronounces it that way.

  • My name is Jannika (J sounds like a Y) and it's pronounced the way you like.  Either way, I bet she'll get a variety of pronounciations like I do :)

This - Anneke is the most common Dutch spelling for the diminutive of Anna, although Annika is also fairly common.

To be honest, I've never seen Ahneke before and neither has my (Flemish/Dutch-speaking) DH.

Other common Dutch diminutives for the name Anna are: Antje (pronounced 'ONT-yuh') and Anouk (pronounced 'AH-nook').

  • If we have a girl, we're spelling her name Annika.  Annika Leigh.
  • That's my niece's name and it's spelled Ahnika. ?I like it because it sounds like it looks, so it's not too confusing.
