Told MIL our name ideas...

She's asked repeatedly what our names are, and we finally caved. After she promised not to laugh at them, haha. She loved Fiona and seemed pretty lukewarm about Miles but she didn't say anything bad about it.

This was funny though: she said they recently went out to dinner with a couple they don't know that well, and the other woman said her daughter had recently had a baby boy. She said the name was "Huckleberry," and my MIL, assuming she was joking, burst out laughing and asked "what is it really?" Unfortunately the name was real and the woman was very offended. Oops! lol

Re: Told MIL our name ideas...

  • Who wouldn't laugh at Huckleberry? Geez!

Glad she reacted well. I know my MIL won't, so we're still keeping them from her!

  • I refuse to tell my MIL anything.  She would find fault in any name...
  • Oops!  Awkward! LOL  That sounds like something I would do!!

My MIL seems pretty lukewarm about our name too - but I figure it will grow on her! :)

  • Glad she responded so well.  I don't think my MIL would.  Before we were ever expecting our first, the topic of names came up and she kept saying crap about the name Kylee, so we have kept our mouth shut and still used it with our first.  I just don't trust my MIL to keep her mouth shut.  She has no brain to mouth filter.

  • glad it went well for you. i wish i hadn't said anything , we have 2 chjoices for boys and 2 for girls. my parents were so opinionated that i left really angry and am still upset. they gave me BS reasons why they would not pick 2 of them, forced their opinions and refused to accept taht my DH has a say in this too. My mom started crying that i might pick another girl name and my dad hated one because it reminded him of the last name of an uncle he doesn't like. it did not go well and i will not talk to them about it at all until the baby comes

My MIL is really sweet, so I knew she would never say anything negative. But I'm also pretty intuitive and I knew I would be able to tell if she disliked them, even if she pretended she did. So I could tell she doesn't love Miles, but doesn't hate it.
  • My MIL keeps asking too, but our mouths are shut.  She said recently, "It's not going to be something weird, is it?"

Well considering how everyone has the same names in her family I can't imagine what she considers 'weird':

Anthony - 5 (yes, 5 Tony's in the family, including DH)

    William - 3

    John - 3

    Donna - 2

    Elizabeth - 2

    Kristen - 2

I can understand family names, but it's 'weird' to me that they keep giving babies the same names!

And no, NONE of those are on our lists!

    Baby Boy #1 born 1/15/2010

    Babies #2 & #3 arriving Spring 2014 (EDD June 18)

  • When I told MIL we were seriously considering Julia, she said, "Well everyone will call her Julie." I said "No, everyone will call her what we tell them to call her!"
  • Since we aren't finding out the sex of our new baby... it's been easy to avoid the questions of "What are the names you have picked out?" HAHAHA

DH and I think we have figured a boy name and a girl name. I talked to my mom about it and she loved both names. Though she wasn't fond of the girl's middle name since it's my dad (her ex husband's) mom's name. It's pretty though and worked well... LOL

  • HUCKLEBERRY!

So yeah, I'm just afraid my MIL will come up with some stupid nickname or something to make me dislike our names. And after it took what felt like forEVER to narrow it down to two, I just couldn't handle starting from scratch again.

  • Glad it went ok (love Fiona!) - it's so dicey.  As you know, my dad is not a fan of our names, but meh.  I like them.

And Huckleberry. . . ooooh.  Ouch.

  • OH I love love love Fiona and Miles.  We are not telling b/c we don't want to hear reactions... also, we want to reserve the right to change our minds at the last minure without everyone freaking out on us :)

But I'm proud of you for having the guts to face the possible stupid comments from MIL!  I don't trust my hormones enough.

  • Miles and Fiona are beautiful names! That Huckleberry kid is going to get beat up on the playground. Something to think about when naming a child, I think....
  • See I just don't care what anyone thinks of our name choice.  SIL and MIL don't realy like the 1st name...BIL doesnt like it coupled with the middle name...I just said to them "well its a good thing that its not your baby then, huh!?"

My child.  My choice.  You want to have an opinion about names-go get knocked up.

  • My MIL suggested we name our LO Reid or Kiptyn. You think she is a Bachelorette fan or what? Stick out tongue
  • Doesn't matter how bad a name is, you should never laugh when someone tells you their child's name.  Wait until you are in private and THEN laugh.

  • Huckleberry is almost as bad as Jasmine for a boy. At my last appointment my OB said he just delivered a boy and he asked what they were naming him, and they said Jasmine. Wow, is all I could say. I did start chuckling at Huckleberry.
  • There was a baby named Huckleberry at our daycare, and I laughed every time I heard it.  Even when the mom announced it, I think I kind of choke swallowed.  It's just a ridiculous name... no way around it.

    Other random ones at daycare:

Baby Blue (I'm pretty sure they're going to stop putting Baby in front at some point)

Little Manny (even his diapers are labeled that way)

Royal (which is funny when you hear someone yell, "Royal, Blue, come over here for breakfast")
