Mixed Couples - Birth Cert Race

My husband is Native American (Half) and I'm Caucasian - So our child will be 1/4 Native American. I am unsure as to which race i will put on the birth cert. Any one else having this same issue?

Re: Mixed Couples - Birth Cert Race

  • Hmm I never thought about this.  I am caucasian and my H is 100% Bolivian.  I guess we will put hispanic for our baby.

  • I'm half Asian and to be honest with you I haven't thought of it until now....hmmm

You should put "other".  I don't have this problem - but I think that is what I would do.

  • i'm caucasian and my husband is african american. I don't know how birth certificates are set up, but I want to put both of us down if at all possible.

  • depending on where you live, it may be determined by your race - doesn't necessarily matter what race your DH/SO is.

  • My DH is also half Native American and we put Caucasian and Native on the birth cert for my son.

  • I'm Italian and my Hubby is Puerto Rican...what should I put? Hispanic I guess bc our last name is Hispanic...??
  • I am 50% Cuban and my mom put "caucasian" on my birth cert.  I am not very thrilled about that as an adult, but oh well.

I put white for DD b/c she is 75% caucasian and will for this LO too.  Not sure if that was the right choice or not

With DD - It asked each parents race and then asked the race of the child...that is the part i was unsure about. They may have changed in the past 5 years.

  • As dumb as this might sound...

It might be a good idea to make sure that Native American makes its way onto the birth certificate.  There are special grants and scholarships that you can only get if you're 1/8+ Native American.  So down the road, you may be setting up your little one for covered college tuition!

I just remember being pissed that I couldn't apply for half the grants on my college list!  DOY!Stick out tongue

-you didn't, but I sure did in my PP-

  • Yeah that is what I thought about the scholorships.

My dad is adopted but it says Cauc. on his BC. But he is obviously part native american. If that would have been on there, I could have gotten more money for college. That sounds selfish, but very true. And we needed it at the time. So I just had major College Loans.

Something to think about for sure!

  • Gosh, I am Hispanic (100%) and DS Is caucasian...I don't remember what we put and I don't even remember that being asked.?
Geez, I wonder what I put down. If I were you I would go with the highest percentage which would be caucasian. I'm going to guess it really doesn't matter since the US is such a melting pot anyways.?
  • I was going to say white because the child would be more white than anything else.  That is a good point that the PP pointed out that the kid might get some extra college money down the road if you put nat.am.  GL.

I'm also half Cuban but that's a nationality/ethnicity...my race is caucasian.  There are many different races from different countries and my mom makes a point of telling everyone she meets that.

So I'll be putting Caucasian for our LO's birth certificate but if our children come across forms that also include nationalities, I will have them put Cuban/Spanish/Hispanic or whatever word is on that particular form.

I'm def for everyone working hard to achieve their goals, but unfortunately there's still a lot of racism in this world, racism that I was naieve to until I started dating my DH, and sometimes grants, scholarships, and affirmitive action is still needed here in America. It's sad, but true.

  • I would think "mixed" would be correct.  If two people are clearly different races, there is no reason why the parents should be forced to pick one over the other.

  • I agree and I don't think her comment was racist.  I know she's not the only one who feels that way.  Obviously not everyone will agree as there is still a large push for special programs.  Although,  I would like to think the majority pushes for equal treatment.  I'm all for equality and everyone being treated the same and receiving the same opportunities regardless of race, gender, etc.  I'm assuming that is what she meant as being the ultimate goal.

I'm only a small amount of Native American and I'm a mix of other nationalities so yes, I am white, but you know what? I don't understand people who bemoan not having grants to go to college, there are scholarships out there, for instance academic scholarships. I had a full ride to school based on my academics so I didn't have to cry about not getting a grant. For that matter, I had 2 scholarships so my college PAID me to go there.

When my grandmother was in high school she was denied a scholarship because she was black. And for crying out loud, we're all women. We're being discriminated all the time. • About two years ago the U.S. census information was updated to where a person can choose more than one race.  When you start a new job the form that is used to collect this information has been changed.  I would assume they cascaded that change to all U.S. forms such as birth certificates.

I agree!  I think when people say things like this it makes them sound so ignorant!   That is the kind of opinion that is better kept to yourself.  This country was owned by native americans until white people came and took it over killing thousands.  The least we can do is offer scholorships to them!!!

Where I live in the Southwest the impact of what happened 400 years ago is still very real.  I live in a community that was founded 400 years ago by a spanish settler coming here and killing many of the natives and taking over their land.  When something that devastating happens the impact lives on and on, it doesn't just go away.  It is passed on from generation to generation.

Currently the city is planning a celebration in honor of this event and you can bet that some of the native americans are upset and rightly so over us celebrating the brutality that was done to their ancestors.

Most of the native people are kind and have come to terms with it but the history is there right in front of our faces every day.

It is not as simple as you make it seem.  Take a look at the Middle East where they have been fighting over the same thing for hundreds and hundreds of years.  That proves that hard feelings don't die easily.

Yeah, I know and I thought I said that. I used my grandmother as an example. Next time I'll use the words "for example".
