DH and I are looking into it because it will cost us less than full time infant care where we live. It will also be one on one attention and it would be perfect if we find one that speaks Chinese!
1) Seriously do a background check on them (don't just tell them you're going to do it, and then not)
2) Make sure they give you references, because if you want someone watching your child, they should at least have experience with children (and be CPR/First-Aid certified)
Like a live in AuPair? If so just take into account that you will have to pay for her food and the extra utility expenses when you are figuring up how much it will costs.
I am going to be a SAHM, but if DH and I worked long hours I would love to have one.
I looked into it, but where I live, it was too expensive and we would have to provide room and board, which is something we can't do. Luckily, my mother told us she wants to be our nanny.
You might want to ask this on the working moms board.

I don't have one, but I actually know two people that were au pairs in the past (one is from Belgium, one is from France.) I think it has definite advantages, particularly if you work long or variable hours. I would think it would be important to be diligent in your interview process to find someone that really fit with your family.
The Au Pair program is a one year program. They live in with you as well. It's not like having a nanny. I have a couple friends who had au pairs. There are advantages and disadvantages. You have another person living in your home and you have to get into a groove of who exactly does what when. You will never have your house just to yourself unless she goes out in her off hours.
We wouldn't consider having an Au Pair, but would consider a nanny. The main reason being - I don't like to share my home. As of now, I will be a SAHM, but we have considered a Spanish speaking nanny if/when I go back to work. (our neighbor is due a few months before me and we have discussed sharing a nanny down the road)
Re: would anyone considered using an AuPair or have expeirence with one? Please share!
I would if we thought we could afford it.
Just a little tip though...

2) Make sure they give you references, because if you want someone watching your child, they should at least have experience with children (and be CPR/First-Aid certified)
