Not sure if anyone remembers my post from a month or so ago about my grandparents? Long story short my grandma passed away last fall and my grandfather, who has always been very cruel and abusive, immediately changed their will and is refusing to allow my mom or me to have anything to remember my grandma by. He is selling all of her possesions as quickly as he can and blowing the money on the new women he is dating.
The only thing I wanted was my grandma's recipe box. My sister and I spent a lot of time learning how to cook with my grandma (who was an amazing cook) and I have so many special memories of time spent in the kitchen with this wonderful woman. This was the one thing she was very specific that I was to have when she passed away and it really broke my heart knowing I would probably never see it again.
So today is my birthday and what does DH surprise me with? A cookbook made from copies of all the recipes in my grandma's recipe box. On monday he went to my grandfather's house and spent over an hour trying to convince my grandfather to give him the recipe box for my birthday. He refused to let him keep the originals, but he did let DH take the box long enough to make copies of all of the recipes. So DH spent who knows how long standing at a copy machine making copies of all of my grandma's recipes (and there are a lot of them) and had them bound for both me and my sister.
I have been in tears all morning thinking about it. I can't imagine that anyone could have given me a more thoughtful or heartfelt gift. It means so much that DH would do that for me. I know he spent so much time on it and put himself in such an awkward position dealing with my grandfather who is truly unstable to the point of being dangerous. It was such a gift of love. Sometimes I truly don't think I deserve this man!
