GD Test and some insights...

I had my GD test this morning.  The drink, 10 oz orange, wasn't God awful, but I wouldn't want to drink it everyday.  It was like a flat Sunkist.  I was told that I had to drink it within 5 minutes of opening it.  While I was waiting to take the plunge, I decided to read the bottle.  The directions say to fast for 12 hours prior to the test.  My doctor didn't tell me to fast and I don't think it's a big ordeal.  Just thought since so many people have questions about it, I'd let you know what the actual bottle says:-)  After the hour, they drew 3 vials of blood and I will know early next week.

GL when you take it.  It's not that bad:-)

Re: GD Test and some insights...

  • When you're pg you are not supposed to fast for the 1 hr test.  It is used for regular diabetes testing too, not just GD.  That is why the bottle said to fast before taking.

No. My bottle actually had separate directions for both regular diabetes testing and pregnant women GD said fast for 12 hours (as well as the regular.)

  • My doc said to eat low-sugar for the 24 hours prior to the test. She suggested an egg and toast without jelly for breakfast that day. I will definitely be doing that, since I tend toward hypoglycemia if I do not eat some protein with sugary items such as the glucose drink. :)

I agree with the OP on this one... I've taken the test a total of 5 times in the past 2 years and each and every time I was told to fast before it - I wasn't told 12 hours, but was told nothing after midnight and to schedule the test for first thing in the morning, so it's more like an 8 hour fast (although I won't be eating anything after my snack right before bed - so it really will be around 12 hours for me)
