Breastfeeding

? for those who have weaned before

Is it normal to get very sore breasts 1week+ from the last feed? I fed DS for the last time on his birthday which was a week and a half ago and had no issues. We did a slow wean so there was never any pain, trouble from plugged ducts or engorgement but the past two days I have been incredibly sore. Do you remember if this is normal? I googled but found basically nothing.

Re: ? for those who have weaned before

  • I was sore while weaning for about 2 weeks, but I had a few days of pretty bad engorgement that I think caused that.  I also weaned pretty slowly but it still 'built up' once I finally stopped.

Do you feel any clogged ducts or anything? It can take awhile to 'dry up' especially having nursed so long, even if you do a slow wean.   You aren't feeling ill or anything.  I'd keep an eye on things just to make sure you aren't getting infected, but it'll probably pass soon.

  • thank you, I was hoping you'd respond! I posted this on 12-24 yesterday but got no answers. I wouldn't say that I had any clogs but I was starting to get a little lumpy last night on one side so I tried to fix that in the shower and it helped some but I'm still just super sore to touch in general. I've been watching for any streaking, etc. The last thing I need is mastitis. Good to know this is all normal, thanks again!
  • Funny you posted this.  I weaned from EPing on Aug. 1 and today i was feeling more sore than usual so I had to pump for a few minutes to relieve the pain.
