911 call and Trip to the ER

R was at my in laws on Friday. they were babysittting. fil was sick and coughing. i didn't realize this at the time. i was really mad about this and sent them an email that said PLEZ if you are showing signs of being sick let us know and we won't bring R there for babysitting.

so R wakes up last night at 1 am coughing and gasping for air. after 3 puffs of his inhaler for asthma i call 911. ambulance comes and takes him to the ER. turns out he has Croup plus an asthma attack. (if you don't know its a virus that inflames the upper airways making it difficult to breath) it took them two hours to get him breathing normal again. doctor says Croup in adults is just a cough and sore throat and asks if anyone in the family is sick. (insert anger and explatives)

this past two 1/2 years they have acted like im crazy for trying to keep R healthy. i think i might invite them over for a tall glass of "i told you so" ugh!!!!!!!!

  • Damn it!  I hope this scares the piss out of them.  It never fails to amaze me how people just don't get it.

  • Ugh. I want to kick your FIL in the ass.

How scary.. I'm so sorry you went through that. People just don't understand how fragile they are on the inside.

  • People just can't seem to get it through their heads that even though they are not in the hospital and they are growing up that they really are somewhat different still on the inside.  My MIL doesn't get it at all and keeps saying things like "Well, she doesn't have any respiratory conditions now, so she should be able to stay in my (smoke filled) apartment."

    Grrrrr.

I am so sorry it came to an ER visit and a terrifying episode!

  • OMG, I cannot believe your FIL pulled that shiz. What a selfish idiot! I'm really angry for you - more so because I know my butthole FIL would do the exact same thing.

Drake had croup about a month ago. It SCARED ME TO DEATH, and he wasn't even sick enough to need the emergency breathing treatment. That croupy noise with every inhale and exhale sent shivers down my spine and made my stomach fall to the floor. It's the stuff preemie mom nightmares are made of.

    How is R doing now?

You poor thing :(  Are you doing okay now?

  • I'm so glad he is ok now and like pp said, I hope this episode made your inlaws realize just how important it is that they play by the preemie rules.

  • That's just ridiculous!  It reminds me of this past April....we had a few relatives to our house for Easter.  I told everybody not to come if they were sick (we have to keep DS healthy because of his heart condition).  Wouldn't you know it, Dad showed up with a nasty cold and naturally, I ended up with it and so did DS.  Fortunately DS kicked it faster than me!  I was pleasantly suprised at that but still pissed that we got sick at all.

I'm sorry that you all had to go through that.  People are so clueless and careless!

  • Wow Wow Wow!  I am so sorry.  I feel so lucky that my FIL is a pedi and my dad is a doc too so they all get it thank god!!!  I can't even imagine if they did not understand.
  • I am so sorry your FIL is clueless. I hope he gets better soon!
  • thanks for the support and well wishes.

we were up all last night with R coughing. thankfully the stridor (the scary deep sound when he inhales) is gone. but he was coughing again today so i called the on call doc tonight. they had us do his rescue inhaler 2x 20 minutes apart. he HATES the inhaler and screamed bloody murder when we woke him up to do it. finally he fell asleep on my husband and we just put him in his crib. we have to repeat the inhaler at 3am. fun. PLEZ lord let him sleep. and us!

i can handle just about any childhood illness, bumps and bruises but when my child's breathing is the issue, oh man that is scary.
