my 4.5mo old stopped swallowing and keeps choking, anyone else?

my 30weeker had her esophagus attached to her stomach at birth ans starting eating her meals by bottle  around her due date 2.5 mo ago. She aspirates liquids into her lungs so I thicken her BM to a honey consistency and she has been  doing realy well with that up to a week ago.

She used to keep the bottle in her mouth and just finish it but now she chokes on it really bad every couple sucks and it looks like she is not swallowing it. I thought for sure she needed an esophageal dilation to stretch her narrowing (with scar tissu) esophagus but we  did a study yesterday and it is not. Her GI doc (who didn't see her eat, think we shoud dwitch to a pmore powerful  reflux med but it doesn't look liek reflux to me)

what else could it be, anyone else?

  • What type of study did they do?  Was it a modified barium swallow study?  It might be that honey isn't thick enough for her and she's aspirating.  I typically see choking in my patients when their liquids are either too thick or not thick enough.  But I work with old people, so I could be totally off base.

  • It seems like perhaps she is protecting her airway so maybe the formula isn't thick enough?   Does she do it right away or after awhile? Perhaps she is getting tired or overwhelmed.
