Milk supply decreasing?

DS is still in the NICU and is having a lot of typical issues with feeding.  He won't latch on me with or without a nipple shield.  He has just started taking some of his feeding via bottle when I'm not there instead of being completely on the feeding tube.  So, I'm pumping.  At the end of last week when my milk came in, I was getting 3-3.5 oz per pumping session.  The past few days, my supply is decreasing and I'm now only getting 1.5-2 oz per pumping session which isn't even enough for one of his feedings.  I am pumping every 3 hours.  Is it normal for my supply to be decreasing?  Does anyone have any ideas or advice on this?  TIA!

Re: Milk supply decreasing?

  • mine decreased about 3months pp.. it sucked.
I tried all the usual stuff:

    Oatmeal
    more pumps
    tons of water
    Fenugreek

but none of them really helped much. Finally I turned to Domperidone (a prescription med like Reglan that isn't available in the US. I have to order it online) and it more than doubled my supply within a week.

  • wow...your LO is eating a lot if that doesn't make a full feeding (my DS left the NICU taking only about 54cc's a feeding!)  That will be great for growth, but I am sure it makes you worry about supply.

I have never had supply issues, but I do know relaxing while pumping helps a ton.  I get almost double when I can sit and put on my hands-free contraption and pump and read or watch tv or bump (as I am doing now) while pumping.

I agree with all of the stuff TriciaJoy recommended, I do all except fenugreek right now.  I had never heard of the Rx she mentioned, maybe that is worth a try.

Yes, they are feeding him a ton and he's putting on weight like crazy.  He's up to 65 CCs every 3 hours and gained 3 oz yesterday.  He's finally back to his birth weight.  Granted he's only taking 15-30 cc's via bottle and the rest is tube feedings so he doesn't really have a choice!  Worrying about decreasing supply is just the last thing I want to think about right now.

  • That is all I ever got as well (when Sam was in the NICU).  When he came home and was eventually EBF, my supply went back up.  Truly, the only way for the milk to increase, IMO, it to have the baby BF (when he is able to, of course).  The pump, for me, just didn't increase my supply the way BFing did.  I did the usual, though- oatmeal every morning, more milk plus supplements and tea, and power pumping every hour.  GL to you!
  • Try to do as much skin to skin contact as you can.  Even if you can't get him to latch, still put him to the breast.  I swear that's what made my milk finally come in!
