3rd Trimester

Cramp style contractions?

Ok so I know this has been brought up time and time again...

And I really dunno what I was expecting to feel for contractions? Maybe a stabbing pain I thought, who knows? it's my first..

But Ive heard that menstrual type of cramps can be contractions... or BH, but ive had them a once in a great while over the last few weeks.. but today ive been having them alot more (nothing too close tho)...

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this as a contraction?

Re: Cramp style contractions?

  • My mom described contractions to be very intense period cramps.  That sounds almost bearable doesn't it?

  • I've been experiencing menstrual cramp like pain in my pelvic area and in my back.  It happens maybe once or twice a day.  However two nights ago it got really painful and lasted 10 or 15 minutes, but never came back.  I was actually in quite a bit of pain.  I am just gonna pay close attention and not freak out until anything is timeable.
  • I'd call that pre-labour. I had it start at about week 28 with Baby #1. It became more frequent as the weeks went by and then the week before they were MUCH more frequent and more painful too. The OB said it was my body "getting ready".

I knew the difference as soon as I felt my first contraction. For me, a contraction made me unable to move, speak or really even breathe properly. Don't want to scare you. DS was also facing the wrong way so I had back labour.

  • The best way that I can describe "real" contractions is that they are much more intense than BH.  I know there is the occasional women who reports very little pain with her "real" contractions but in general a contraction that will get your cervix to open tightens and spans your entire mid-section.  To me BH feel more crampy in my lower abdomen.  Hope that helps a little.
  • Thanks, yeah im pretty sure my body is just getting ready and theyre BH, and hes getting into position..

but thanks for the input on "real" ones.. i wasjust curious.. havent had anything where i couldnt talk or walk yet. and im sure when i do feel them.. i wouldve never guessed they wouldve felt the way they do...

ill just have to wait and see!

  • the way i knew my contractions were the real ones is that they were A LOT stronger (firmer) and were easily timeable.  for the first 3-5 hours they were very mild but continued to be timeable...then they became much more painful and continued to grow more and more painful.

definitely consider timing them if you feel they are real!

  • IDK personally... I asked my OB about them today because I get BH a lot but last night I had really bad menstral like cramps that made me nauseated. I never had ANY contractions with DD so this is new to me too. He said if I felt them like that again, I needed to come in right away so that he could check my cervix... I guess it is a possibility, especially since 'everyone is different'...
  • Sounds like BH.

Real contractions are difficult to walk through, talk through and they will not let up. They will be consistent and get closer together. Your entire stomach will bunch up into a tight ball, too. You may feel it in your back as well.

If you have to breathe through them and can't walk/talk then I'd call it the real deal.
