3rd Trimester

Anyone NOT having internals?

I have an appointment with my MW tomorrow and she will perform the Strep B test.  She said that is the only time they will check my cervix, and the only reason they check is so that we can start working on some things to help me progress.  Anyone else have a similar situation?

Re: Anyone NOT having internals?

  • My docs start at 39 weeks, unless there is a reason to start earlier (like contractions, etc. or at my request). My first one will be Monday. I don't even think he looked when he did the GBS swab.
Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.

  • i havent had any yet either, wont til 39 weeks at the earliest.
  • I had my first internal on my due date.  I don't think I'll have another one - they just don't seem necessary to me.  It was more discouraging than encouraging to learn that I was only 1cm dilated.
  • Me.  I thought I'd get one (just since she'd be there) for my GBS test, but she let me do that myself, so now I plan to not get any at all, unless I'm maybe 40/41 weeks with no signs of labor, just to see. But even then, my head knows they mean nothing so I don't really see the point.
  • I am having internals they are definately uncomfortable but I can opt out apparently. I would not worry about not having them done, unless you are contracting its not too big of a deal to check.
  • none scheduled yet. they don't mean anything anyways so it seems silly to check.

  • Our dr starts at 36-37 weeks.
  • I'm not... I have no reason to have them and I don't want to know what's going on unless there is something wrong...I hate to think I am 1 cm. for three weeks...so until I'm at 40 weeks, I'm not getting them done.
  • My situation is exactly like yours.  My OB checked me two weeks ago during my GBS swab and won't check me again until I'm in labor... or past 40 weeks.

  • Me.  I won't have any until I'm overdue or in labor - not even at the GBS test.

I'm not sure why no progress at your GBS test date would lead them to want to start progression measures, since GBS is done around 37 weeks.  No need to rush it.

  • Me, not by choice though. My doctor doesn't do them until I am past my due date.

A part of me wants to know if these contractions are doing anything, but another part is like, you'll just be disappointed.

  • My dr only did one, at my 40 week appointment Tuesday. It didn't hurt but I was bleeding for two days afterwards. She didn't do one with the GBS test.

  • I have actually requested not to have internals from my OB unless they want to run a test like Strep B.  Checking dilation and effacement may be "encouraging" to some people, but it doesn't actually translate into any indicators when you will go into labor, so I'd rather not get my hopes up false-ly.  Baby will come when baby comes.  I do not need to risk a yeast infection to know whether I'm 4cm or 0cm.
