First Speech Therapy Session = Fail

Zach had a busy day yesterday, culminating in his first speech therapy session through the EI program.  The therapist came to our house at 4:30, and while Zach was not happy, he at least stayed in the same room (with the OT he stood by the sliding door in the dining room while we were in the living room).  She was able to get him to play with a few toys and stack some blocks, and he demonstrated some of his signs.  But he was whiny and lying on the floor through most of it.  At about 5:10 he crawled onto my lap while we continued to play with the bus, and then he put his head to my chest and proceeded to get sick everywhere.  Multiple times.  On me, on the carpet, on the couch.  The therapist gathered her stuff and left, while I brought Zach up to the tub.  Once in there, I said, "You just wanted that lady to leave, didn't you?"  I was joking, but he nodded his head yes.

Lunch yesterday included blueberries, so now I have a nasty blue spot on my area rug.  DH thought it was nerves from the session, but DS repeated it later that night (luckily on the tile kitchen floor).  I felt so bad for him, he looked so confused.  My stomach has been queasy last night and today, so I think it was something we ate.  Hopefully next session will be better.

  • Bummer!  I will say that it took at least a few sessions of therapy for my son to actually engage for more than 15 minutes. He is not a risk taker when it comes to speech so when she would press him on trying new sounds or words he would shut down.  He gradually has become more comfortable with his SLP and has made gradual progress so hang in there!

Hugs! I agree, give it some time and I'm sure he'll do just fine.
