i know a lot of babies who sleep better swaddled still wriggle out of them. so, how do you know if your baby no longer wants to be swaddled? i was watching mathis on the monitor and all he seemed to want was that arm out...
honestly I would just give it a try. If he does ok with his arms out, if not wrap them back up. I always found that they would fuss if they wanted out.
We had one swaddle baby and one no swaddle baby. I could just tell.. We did a modified swaddle before we quit. Try putting 1 arm out and see what happens. Lila loves to suck on her hands. She was angry when swaddled. We swaddled Luca for 6 months. He just didn't sleep when without it. You can always try and if it doesn't work go back to the full wrap.

Chase was fine until about 8 weeks when he would work himself up trying to get his arms out. Shortly after this he flat out fought any attempt we made to wrap him so we stopped altogether.
I agree with bpaullo. Try the one arm version and see what happens.
he's been sleeping with 1 arm out for about a month now. tonight he was fighting to get that other arm out. i unwrapped him and he has been asleep ever since. just like truitt- no weaning from swaddle needed.
I swaddle DS with both arms out. He hates to have his arms wrapped up. He's starting to wiggle out so I thought he was over being swaddled, but boy was I wrong the night I decided not to swaddle.

At first I swaddled Claire with her arms in and no matter how tight I do it she always manages to get both hands and arms out. She likes to suck on her hands and put her hands over her head, like me I sleep with my hands over my head. So now I just leave her arms out because she'll fuss until she has them out and it's been wonderful!
That's what we did with our twins. We just let them sleep with their arms out. When they started to roll over in their swaddle, that's when I decided to stop swaddling them. But early on it worked out great to get them to sleep through the night.
