Parenting after a Loss

s/o c-section question-# and timing

If you had a c-section, emergency or not, did your dr say anything about how many children you can have (assuming all are delivered c-section) or how far apart they should be?  I don't remember if my dr said anything to me.  We are considering TTC next spring, so it's a ways off, but the post below made me wonder about these things.

Re: s/o c-section question-# and timing

  • Mine did not say anything about the number of children I could have but did say that it would be fantastic if I waited a year to have a second child.  But if I got pregnant before the year was out, it would be fine too.

  • They say it is best for your body to heal for a year before you get pregnant again. It just puts you at a greater risk for complications if you are pregnant earlier. It is not totally out of the question though and I am sure tons of people have done it with no problems. My doctor didn't say how many I could have. She knows I want another one, which would be my 3rd c-section and she hasn't said that I can't.

  • nope. nothing was said to me about number of children, or how long to wait before getting pregnant again.

they were so concerned with making sure that I don't take any hormones, that any pp appt. I went to,  and infact, while I was still in the hospital, that was all they talked about.

  • I asked my dr. this, and she said it all depends on your particular scar tissue after each section. She said most people can do 3 c/s, maybe 4. The most she's ever done on someone is 5. She asked that I wait 9-12 months before getting pg again, 12 being preferable. We're going to start TTC this month.

  • I asked about this. The doc said # of children didn't really matter much, but if we were planning on a bunch he'd probably like to try one or two vaginally. He said he had done 6 c-sections on one woman before, so really it was ok. He likes to do repeat c-sections rather than VBAC most of the time to reduce risk of placental abruption and something else during labor.

ETA: timing...he said he'd like to see us wait 6 months before TTC to fully heal.
