For those of you who have had a DC's 1st birthday party

What did you do for a cake?

I'm debating.  I know my free time is near nonexistant these next few weeks, but I'd like a nice cake for  DS's 1st bday - that is the one picture that I know of from my 1st birthday.  I'm just curious about what the EFFer's have done.  Did you make it kid-healthy?   Did you do fun shapes - if so, how incredibly difficult was that?  Just looking for attainable ideas.

  • Ooh, what about one of those shaped cake pans?  Looks like a train or some of the other cute ones out there?  And maybe if you find an easy scratch recipe use applesauce and not as much sugar in the recipe if there's a lot.  I don't know.  I hope you find something you love and that the party is a huge success!  Big Smile

  • I did homemade cupcakes for J's birthday and they were a big hit.  I have one of those tiered cupcake holders too which made it festive.

For C, we did a birthday brunch, so I ordered out a carrot cake (I was lazy).

  • I AW'ed my cake pics a few pages ago but I did a box mix for cupcakes and a smash cake for DD. I used a shaped pan to make her smash cake and I decorated both that and the cupcakes myself. I only did enough cupcakes for a cupcake tree and then I got a half sheet cake from Fry's. I made the CC's vanilla and the bakery cake chocolate b/c I am really picky about chocolate being too dry and I knew the bakery cake would be good - so anyway, that presented guests with options. And I found that decorating the CC's and smash cake was less daunting than a half sheet.

  • Happy Hearts - I love the cupcakes & smash cake!!!  Did you do the marshmallow flowers on the cupcakes?  I don't know that that would really go for a lil' boys party, but they're adorable.  Love your pics!

Thanks! I did do the flowers/marshmallows cut up on the CC's. I got the idea here.  It was really easy. You should try cutting some up and seeing if they can make the shape of an animal or something fun! I bet you could google easy cupcake decor like that and find all kinds of things! LOL yeah I don't think it would work well for your DS. :)

  • And I forgot to say - I WANTED to make something from scratch but it didn't happen. I did do the frosting from scratch b/c homemade buttercream is better for the cake details that I did with a bag and decorating tip than storebought frosting.

  • My mom made DS a Pablo (from the Backyardigans) cake with a shaped cake pan for his 1st b-day and I made him one of those Giant Cupcakes for his 2nd.
  • i made a cake for a friend's girl's first birthday, and i used this recipe from Martha stewart with no refined sugar, egg or dairy. It was really moist and delicious. I halved the batter, and it made 2 9" layers and 4 4" layers (for a smash cake and for 2 un-iced cakes for the smallest tykes). I used a cream cheese icing which had less sugar than buttercream.
