Preemies

New here, looking for peers

Hello all you moms of preemies!  I'm new here, although I have been commenting on all of your posts for a week or two.  It's been great to have women to relate to!

I honestly can't figure out all of the acronyms, half the time I can't figure out what you all are saying. :)

I had a preemie at 21w2d who passed away shortly after his birth, and I had a preemie at 27w3d who spent 94 days in the NICU.  My surviving preemie is now almost 3 yrs old and she has asthma and she gets croup and pneumonia frequently due to her weak lungs.  We use an inhaler for her every single day, and a second inhaler on occassion.

I'm looking for others who have preemie toddlers who are maybe experiencing what I am.  Sick appointments, the ER, croup and pneumonia, still a partial quarantine during RSV season, etc.

Is this group for just preemie babies or are others here with toddlers?

Thanks everyone!

  • There is a mix of newbies with new preemies, like me, and experienced veterans of preemies also.  They are extremely helpful in answering my questions I know.

  • Welcome to the board!  I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your first baby.  I'm glad your 27 weeker is doing well and hope you get the support you're looking for on this board.  I think you will!
  • Welcome! I am especially excited to have a new mom of a toddler preemie on the board, since my guy is 13 months now. There's definately more new mommies here but probably 10 or so of us with toddlers.

Last year we only had one illness that required breathing treatments, but that occurred immediately after he stopped getting Synagis, so I am a little afraid of what this RSV season will have in store for us, when he won't be getting Synagis.

  • Welcome to the board! ?I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your first baby. ?That must have been devastating. ?I think this board will be a good place for you to 'hang out' on.

I have a 15 month old and a toddler who will be 3 in October. ?Keira (the 15 month old) has chronic lung disease and just recently officially got off her oxygen that she needed at night. We haven't had the illnesses that your little one has experienced, but I guess we'll see what this winter has in store for us. ?I'm crossing my fingers!

  • Welcome! I'm also the mommy of a 27-week toddler.  Campbell is 18 months old.  What acronyms are you having trouble with?  Maybe we can try to translate...

  • Hi, and welcome!

So sorry to hear about your loss. I live in Utah too. I have twin preemies. My son has asthma and my daughter required oxygen for the first month at home when we brought her home from the NICU. They were 33 weekers, and spent 4 weeks in the NICU at LDS. They turn 2 on Oct 1, and overall are happy healthy little toddlers. We had our fair share of struggles inthe beginning, but are now doing pretty well. I still pop into this board from time to time to see if I can offer advice to any other new moms who are going through some of the same struggles that my kids did. I know you will find great support in this group. They are an awesome bunch of ladies.

  • Also, on the left hand side of this page at the bottom, there is a Bump Board Glossary... it will help you with all the acronyms!
  • I have a toddler...he's now 2 but was born at 33 weeks due to pPROM.  I check in on the board from time to time :)

  • Great to hear from you!  Our second winter we kept our toddler quarantined just like we did during her first winter (she also got the Synagis shots her first RSV season) and we had no problems, our girl stayed very healthy!  I would advise you to keep your preemie just as protected the second winter.  It was the third winter when we tried to not be quarantined that my girl got sick almost every week until we reinstated a partial quarantine.  It's all crazy and I still don't see the end in sight!
  • Good luck to you!

All the illnesses we've had actually have been almost as prevalent in the summer as in the winter.  In the winter we try to keep her away from sick kids and we're much more cautious, but we try to expose her a little and let her catch a cold now and then during the summer so she'll get stronger.  Well, she never just gets a cold, she gets croup or pneumonia (pneumonia from the RSV virus which still exists just isn't widely spread).

It's exhausting.  I almost want to quarantine her until she's 5 - because that's when I've heard croup stops happening so much.  But, I don't want her to be weak and sickly because of such extended isolation!  Besides, I want her to live life and enjoy it.

    Hmmmm...what to do.

  • Welcome to the board!
  • Welcome!  This is an awesome board of mixed preemie ages and experiences, we've all had a little bit of everything.  It's great to have another mom of an older preemie here, though I'm sorry for your loss and your need for a support group like us.
  • see my post on trip to ER with croup and asthma.breathing problems are very scary.

i hope she grows out of it soon.
