My OBGYN doesn't offer NT scans as the regular OB work-up but we can have it done if we want to. My understanding of an NT scan is to check for Downs and other birth defects. Did your insurance cover this? What do you think about it? TIA.
My insurance covered it, but required me to call ahead of time. If you can swing it, do it! It was the most wonderful experience ever! Picture in siggy.
An NT scan is generally not a routine test. It is a screening ultrasound which you can opt into. It was covered through my insurance as a diagnostic test. If you're going to do the scan, you will get the most accurate results if you also combine it with first and second trimester bloodwork. Keep in mind that this is a SCREENING test, not a diagnostic test. It will look for indicators to see if you are at higher risk for Downs, Trisomy 18, and other things. If you are determined to be at a higher risk, the only way to get a definite answer is to do an amnio. My doctor said if I wasn't willing to do the amnio to get that answer, then it wasn't worth doing the screening. So, you might want to think about that.
We opted in to the testing because my MIL had a baby with spina bifida who died at birth, and this is one of the things they look for with the testing. We wanted to be as prepared as we could in the event that there was something going on with baby.
Also, the NT scan needs to be done by the end of week 13. I had mine done at 13w2d; they also drew the first round of bloodwork that day. I had my second blood draw around 17w, I think.
If you want to do the testing, talk to your doctor about it. Mine has to refer you out to a specialist office for it. You need to alot enough time for that.
Ours was amazing and we were lucky that it was covered by our insurance. If you call the office performing it they can give you the medical billing codes that they will be sending your insurance company. Then you can call the insurance company and find out if those codes will be covered under your plan.

I'm not doing it Our family has no history of birth defects and DH & I are young and healthy. Our insurance would cover it, but I opted out.
I'll just wait until my 18-22 week ultrasound to see the little one.
