Preemies

preemie due to cervical cancer?

My SIL had cervical cancer and is starting to talk about TTC. Doctors have told her that she might have trouble staying PG and that any baby she does have will have to be delivered at 30w by c/s. She doesn't live in the US (they teach overseas), so I'm not really sure where they are getting this info. She's definitely scared and I was wondering if anyone had any info or would know where she can go for info.

TIA

Re: preemie due to cervical cancer?

  • I think it really depends on the treatment she had for the cancer, and how invasive it was when she was treated.

I had cervical cryosurgery in 2002 for some precancerous lesions on my cervix. It cured the cancer/hpv. My doctors swore up and down that the cryosurgery had nothing to do with my PTL/IC.

There are more aggressive treatments, like LEEP, where part of the cervix is burned off, or cone resectioning (I think that's what it's called) where big pieces of the cervix are cut off. I'm guessing she had 1 of these 2 procedures done, since her doctor is so gloom and doom.

I don't really know where to go for information. Are there perinatologists or maternal-fetal-medicine doctors where she is? There's got to be some sort of treatment that will help her keep a baby cooking longer (like a cerclage or a pressage/presserage (forget what it's called exactly)).

Gosh, I really hope that doing lots of research now makes for a very uneventful pregnancy for her!

  • I don't know what your SIL had done to remove the cancer (congrats to her, btw!) but I had the LEEP procedure done 6 weeks after Drake was born.  My doctor told me that I had an increased risk of having Incompetent Cervix with any future pregnancies and highly advised against getting pregnant in the following 6 months (or so).  He didn't say for sure that I would have a preemie but just gave me the possibilities.

    HTH!

  • I agree with PP. ?The doctors are probably warning about incompetent cervix due to LEEP or something like it. ?I'm not sure why he's already insisting it be a c/s though. ?That part seems weird, but I'm not an expert.

    Ditto

  • I don't know much about her cancer as it happened before she was with BIL. I do know that she's said she only has "part of a womb and cervix", so it sounds like she's had some parts removed. I guess the weird part to me is that they've already told her how long she can carry a baby, instead of letting her body decide.

I think that is weird too... it is one thing to say they would have to do a c-section at 36-37 weeks, but 30?  That seems crazy!  But, I am no doctor!
