school me in cloth diapers

I have been trying to research cloth diapering for a little while now and am still overwhelmed.  I have been to lots of sites and have read up on the terminology but still don't quite get it.  I am not sure how the pre-fold, fitteds, AIO's, liners, pockets, inserts, covers and all that other stuff work exactly and what gets paired with what. I don't know anyone IRL who cloth diapers so if anyone is bored and wants to give me a free tutorial I would love to listen!!

Re: school me in cloth diapers

  • As much as I'd love to, I've got too much going on.  There's a fairly good thread on the last page of threads titled 'summerly sent me' which may help out a bit.  here's a quick & dirty:

fitteds, prefolds and flats all need covers

AIO (all in ones) and pockets do not need covers

pockets need inserts, but you can use doublers (which can also be inserts, at times, depending on size/brand,e tc) to make almost any diaper more absorbent by just laying it on the top inside of the diaper.

Liners are generally to grab non water soluble poop, to prevent having to scrape non EBF poo off of your diapers before they go in the pail, as non EBF poo is not water soluble, and will not wash away as completely in the wash if there's a lot of it.

HTH a bit!  The thread I mentioned will probably give you a few more insights as well.
