Biking while pregnant?

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question...I am going on a trip when I'll be ~24 weeks pregnant. I think that biking (like road bike, not motorcycle bike) is safe while pregnant (as long as I don't do anything too strenuous or fall off the bike, etc). My question for you ladies is, how comfortable (relatively speaking) do you think it would be at 24 weeks? I'm going to Door County and they have some great bike trails but we can always just hike instead. TIA for your opinion! Smile

Re: Biking while pregnant?

  • I biked regularly pre-pregnancy, but here in the past week I haven't anymore because my sense of gravity is a little off with the belly out front. My OB said to bike away until I felt uncomfortable, and this week I had a big growth spurt, and my center of gravity is way off.

If you're still comfortable, have fun!

  • I quit biking around our lake at about 20 weeks.  I have to pee so often and the bumps killed.

I saw do it for as long as you're comfy.  My friend rollerbladed every day right up until the day she went into labor.

  • I for one would NOT be comfortable. ?Physically it would be difficult and I worry about falling. ?Definitely not for me.
  • Have you been on the bike recently?  Try it and see how you feel.  I think I am off balance for my bike and couldn't make it very far but I still love to hike.

  • I've read you can do it as long as you are comfortable, but after 2nd tri is not recommended. Personally, I am already uncomfortable bending over to reach the handlebars, but I guess thats up to you. I'd try it and see. We are also going on a trip next weekend, and DH is bringing his bike, but I'm not bringing mine!
  • I just went on vacation at 25 weeks, and my OB told me that I was not supposed to bike ride - and this was not strenuous mountain biking or anything - it was just leisurely riding through our resort area.  She said because your center of gravity is off, and it just isn't safe.  So, as much as I wanted to go for a nice bike ride, I didn't!!
  • My OB said absolutely not. I am going to CO in a few weeks and will be 25 weeks pg. We wanted to bike ride (easy and slow) down the mountain. She said I would be too off balanced.

    Just one opinion

  • My OB told me from the very beginning not to bike ride while pregnant. She said your balance is off and you don't want to risk it and fall. My husband and I LOVE to bike so it's been a boring summer having to walk instead. But it's worth it to not take the risk of harming my baby.
  • I just went biking last week when we went camping. We didn't do any trails, mostly just used them around the campsite and whatnot. I certainly got winded more easily than usual, but I think that's just b/c my lungs are currently being smushed by the rest of my internal organs.
