I have always been a highlight kind of girl. But now that I am pregnant I don't know what to do!! Just wondering what your plans/thoughts are as far as hair dye and highlights go throughout your pregnancy?
Highlights are not thought to be as bad as single process, b/c single process goes right on the scalp. Highlights are not put directly on the scalp. Though they recommend waiting to do highlights until after the 1st Tri is over. I will be getting highlights immediately after I am through the 1st Tri!
I used to dye my hair all the time, but I've been going natural for the last few years (the last time I did anything to the color was when we got married, blonde highlights - 3.5 years ago).
I've read conflicting things, I don't think I would do it in the first tri but I see nothing wrong with getting a dye job while pregnant.
My doctor gave me a packet with some pregnancy info. It said that hair coloring and perming is okay while pregnant, but they don't recommend it.
I have an appointment tomorrow with my hairdresser and I know she's going to freak when she sees all my gray hair. I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do.

Agreed. Im a hairstylist and hi lights are not on your scalp and are encased in foil packets. Everything I have heard is that it's not so much the color on your scalp it's the fumes. If you decided to get all over color get semi- permanent color. Last just as long, leaves your hair shinier because it's not as harsh, only processes for 25 minutes instead of 45, and has less fumes because it does not have any peroxide or ammonia. I love semi color and even when not pregnant never use permanent.
I have dark hair, and if I didn't color it, it would be at least 50% gray--I started going gray in high school. I have to color it every 5 weeks or so. I'd previously discussed it with my hairdresser, who has a 6 month old, and she had done a bunch of research and continued to color hers throughout her pregnancy. Ultimately, I decided that whatever debatable, minimal risk there might be was probably less harmful to the baby than the extreme stress I would feel going 8+ weeks with mostly-gray hair. Seriously.
If I could have put it off until 2nd tri without freaking out, I would have. lol.
I got my hair colored about two weeks ago and had first asked my OB. She said she was just at a national conference in May and it had covered the science behind all of the "no nos" while pregnant. Regarding hair dye, the conference confirmed that there is no proven link between dying your hair and birth defects while pregnant. Although it is best to be in a well-ventilated area.
I am not going to color at all. I know that highlighting is considered safer but I worry even about smelling chemicals. I know some places have organic coloring...one in Baltimore does not that I have been there. I see you are from NJ maybe there is some up there? I srsly think they need to invest in a safe hair dye for pg women! I hate feeling like my hair is ugly!
My doctor did not say anything about waiting a certain amount of time to highlight hair. They said it's fine to perm and dye your hair during pregnancy.
My very liberal doc told me to wait until after 10 weeks because "there's a lot [they] don't know about it" I'm in dire need, and I'm getting mine done next week!

My doctor said no color and I had to cancel my appointment My hair looks terrible. I went in for a cut and my stylist told me that the ammonia is the problem. I'm not sure...I hear conflicting things. I'm going to wait until the 2nd tri.
I've gotten my hair highlighted once already and I plan on doing it a few more times before baby is here. I've highlighted my hair for a long time and can't stop now because of my job. My hair can't be a wreck. I read it is perfectly safe and my sister did it when she was pregnant and her baby is fine. I've never noticed a bad chemical smell when she's done my highlights.
I am sticking with my hair color routine. My stylist knows that we are trying (I can't tell her I'm PG because all my friends go to the same salon and we're not telling yet). So she is just doing highlights. Also, I go to an Aveda salon where there are a lot less chemicals in the color. You have to do what's right for you.
I've decided to not get my regular all over touch up this month. I've started using John Frieda color depositing shampoo and it's amazing! I use it every time I wash my hair (every other day) and it covers my grays and blends my color perfectly. It was $10 at Ulta. I'm hoping it will cover me for a while.
Its perfectly safe to color your hair during pregnancy. My aunts sister ( uncles wife) colored & highlighted her hair every 3 months while pregnant and her little girl is perfectly healthy. My next appt is sept 25th a wk before my wedding and imgetting my hair colored and highlighted.
I did all over color last weekend. I was a little aprehensive, but my OB said it's safe and most of what I've read on-line says it's safe too. I was really trying to hold out, but I just couldn't bear my roots and grey hairs anymore.
There is nothing wrong with highlighting or over all color of your hair at any point of the pregnancy. Hair color use to contain formaldehyde, which it doesn't anymore. There are no longer chemicals in hair color that are unsafe. You may have a specific allergic reaction to the color now, even if you didn't have one before, because of your body changes. So you may want a test spot done.

this is me too. Glad I'm not the only slave to the salon...
This was my first question to my Dr... then to my stylist, then to the salon's senior color director. They ALL assured me it was fine.. exactly what pp said: Hair color no longer contains any of the chemicals that were once troublesome.
We did mine early in the AM in an empty salon to help with my smell aversion to other salon smells. It came out perfect, as always, and made me soooo much happier.
as a hair stylist, i plan to still color my hair. im not sure why people think its a bad thing to color your hair when you are pregnant. now days most color is way less harsh than 10-20 years ago and the worst thing about it is the fumes. and i color hair every day and so many of my co workers have healthy babies!
