Major diaper rash help needed!!

Brooke has had a diaper rash the past day or so.  I have been changing her often, letting her air out 5 minutes after each change, and putting cream on it.  I just changed her diaper before her nap and it is BAD. Like, open sores bad... everywhere. I feel so bad because she was screaming when I cleaned it. But after I let her air out and applied cream, she was fine.

Any tips?!

Re: Major diaper rash help needed!!

  • Did she eat anything new?  I have read that a food allergy can trigger a diaper rash.

Also, have you tried the "butt paste"?  https://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=butt%20paste&origkw=butt%20paste&f=Taxonomy/TRUS/2255957&sr=1

Poor thing!  I hope it gets better!

  • Have you tried a different cream? How about talking to the pedi, maybe it's something other than diaper rash?
  • Try lotramin. I had to call the pedi for a prescription strength cream.

  • Butt Paste is the BEST....use it liberally for a day or two and you will see a big improvement.

This works the best....   I buy this for every shower that I attend.

  • DS has never had it that bad. Maybe let her air it out longer than 5 minutes. It might be messy, but it might heal it.
  • Thanks girls. I used to use butt paste but Destin always worked best. I will have DH stop and get some after work and if that doesn't do the job, we may be calling the Pedi for a stronger cream.

As far as new foods. The only new food she tried was a grilled cheese from Red Robin on Sunday.  Perhaps the cheese?

  • Ditto the butt paste. One of the doctors I work with ordered a bunch of samples for me and it is the BEST!!

Could be something in the processed cheese?  Has she had any sort of processed cheese before?

  • make sure to get cream with 40% zinc oxide.

Nope. That was her first time trying cheese.

  • DD had is really bad when a bitty baby and had open sores from a bad diarrhea/virus episode.  My pedi said to mix zinc oxide (or a diaper cream of your choosing), hydrocortisone cream, and neosporin together and slather it on.  This helped her so much.  I ended up making my own concoction of it and left it at her changing table.  good stuff.
  • oh, and quit wipes for a bit and use only a baby washcloth with warm water or take an aspirator and fill it with warm water and squirt on her bum over the sink/tub for a few days.  The alcohol in the wipes will make it worse.
  • I would try the butt paste and also call the doctor to see what he/she thinks.  It is something to keep in mind before trying cheese again!

  • Poor baby girl! I swear by Burt's Baby Bee's products, I used the powder every morning and after baths smells amazing!! (talc free) and the diaper creme (when needed) which smells like a spa treatment.  It works like a charm!  GL!
  • I would stop using baby wipes asap! Use damp paper towels or washcloths til it clears up. DD kept getting rashes like this before we switched to cloth. Boudreaux's butt paste didn't always work for us. We got Dr Smiths (red white and blue container) from Walgreens and alternated that with a mixture of Aquaphor, Maalox, and Desitin (the stinky kind). Good luck!
  • The doctor told us to stop using baby wipes and try to "rinse" her off - basically, try not to irritate the area. Also, we swear by Triple Paste (Babies R Us has it) and we love it.
  • We got hit by a bad diaper rash after a diarhea + yeast punch.  The Dr. Sears website has a good photo example of a yeast rash.  Our pedi prescribed nystatin and that still didn't knock it out.  Poor Baby!

I'm with the others on stopping the wipes.  We actually set up a changing station next to the kitchen sink to rinse her off with the faucet (and then I'd Anywhere spray everything down) and blot her with towels.

We also let her air out for longer stretches, 20-30mins.  The dry bathtub or baby pool with toys let me not worry about accidents.

If' she's still open/sore/oozing I'd call the pedi tomorrow.  That's just open to infection.  We finally were prescribed Vusion which is crazy pricey, even with insurance, but works.

  • I always have a tube of Nystatin on hand (it's a prescription). Even if she has a HORRIBLE diaper rash, it takes care of it within 24 hours.

  • Stop with the wipes. Put on your diaper rash cream and then on top of that put either aquaphor (first choice) or Vaseline. This repels pee and poo so it won't irritate it. Put it on after every diaper change. Let her air our as much as possible. DS just got a horrible diaper rash after trying yogurt.

DD had horrible diaper rash--so bad that when she pooped in her sleep she would scream at the top of her lungs, it was so painful.  The butt paste helped but the triple paste cured it within 2 days.  It was super expensive ($35 for a tub of it) but worth it.
