This is my first pregnancy, I am about 19 weeks now, I am wondering if Lamaze classes are worth the time and money??
I plan on getting an epidural, so with that, do you really need the Lamaze??
(Also, at this time I have a Placenta Previa issue, so I MAY even end up having to have a sceduled C-Section...)
Thanks in advance for any insite on this.
Re: Lamaze Classes, is it worth it??
I personally wouldn't take Lamaze. I would however, spend money on Bradley classes. In my opinion, they are worth every opinion.
The difference is that Lamaze teaches you breathing techniques to help you divert or not deal with the pain.
Bradley teaches you many things about pregnancy and labor but most helpful are the relaxation techniques. You are taught to deal with the pain and work through it.
I took a "Childbirth Preparation" class at the hospital I delivered at (Hinsdale) and it was very helpful. The class covered everything from what to expect, labor progression, and c-sections. It also covered pain med options, including epidural. It was taught by a Lamaze instructor who was also a NICU RN.
Don't forget, if you do go into labor it may very well be hours before you are allowed an epidural, and you may have to labor at home for awhile. The breathing and relaxation techniques helped me greatly (and I had a pain-med free birth w/ pitocin). But, I do think that if the class was just for breathing techniques and didn't include all of the other info it would have been less helpful.
