Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What to do?

DS is 8 months and has never slept in the crib. He has slept some nights in the bassinet and mostly w/ me because of bf'ing.  He freaks out and has a meltdown when I lay him in the crib and will wake up the minute he touches the mattress. He has never really fell asleep on his own no matter what I do. I am so tired and am getting to the point where posting him on ebay does not sound too bad. Don't need flames, just help.

Re: What to do?

  • Could you start with naps?

    Good luck!

read the ferber book.  Even if you don't end up doing the full-out ferber method, he has some advice about breaking bad habits.

While you're at it, read the weissbluth and pantley books, too.

  • Well, might sound harsh, but I would put him in his crib and let him cry, perhaps with occasional check-ins to let him know he is ok.  Habits are broken in 3 days or so (I think longer), but he has to learn at some point.  I think it is so hard to let a child cry, but probably in his best interest to learn how to sleep by himself, in a safe crib.  If he is 7 months, he is old enough, imo.  GL

  • Yeah, even though we decided not to CIO I still grabbed a bunch of books from the library and kind of picked the techniques that I'd feel comfortable doing with DS.  We're still not perfect and my goal isn't even to have him sleep w/o any night feedings at this point, but it's much better with just little tweaks.
