Adoption

Wowsers - comments from news stories

Have you read some of the comments in those news stories?? Yikes!  Here are some gems:

"Well I guess there is a bright side to all the yuppies becoming poverty stricken, now they have to give up profiling around the mall with their status symbol 3rd world children, and be content to adopt from the poor, abused and down-trodden children that actually need homes in this country"

"There would be a lot more babies up for adoption immediately after birth if our wonderful welfare system didn't subsidize the parents having children they don't plan for"

"I admire anyone who can take on non-biologically related children and try to give them love and security and a proper upbringing."

"after bio mom/dad turned the kid into a disrespectful person who doesn't listen to authority, cannot bond to caregivers, may hurt small animals or burn your house down, has years of therapy in their future, etc - I don't think its fair to blame Americans who wish to be parents for looking elsewhere for their baby. Who wouldn't prefer to start with a clean slate if they could?"

Re: Wowsers - comments from news stories

  • Isn't that terrible? The sad reality is that we have encountered similar types of comments from people who HAVE adopted. I guess not everyone takes adoption to heart and really tries to educate themselves during the journey - sometimes it really is all about 'getting the baby'.

We went to a couple of play groups after G was born with other families who had adopted babies (all were under 10 mo of age). As parents we went around and talked about our journey and the birth of our children. I was really amazed at some of the comments that relate to 'third world children as status symbols' ... discussion about children in the FC/FA ... and how "I wouldn't want a bi-polar baby' (lol as if baby's are bi-polar).

I know that people have looked at us with G and they assume we adopted him from some 'third world country' as they ask 'where is he from' with a snide tone. It's amazing.

  • I know! When that article was published I was astonished by the comments. I had to stop reading them after 1/2 a page. I even wrote about it on my blog that day I was so mad. LOL!
  • I guess my kids aren't very good status symbols, as Korea now has one of the world's largest economies. *sigh* I'll have to return them.

Seriously, I avoid reading the comments sections. They scare me, as all the idiots come out to play.

  • I have noticed in other stories also that the comments sections are a real shocker. Some people must troll the internet looking to make comments about things that they have no knowledge of.
  • What news story is this?

And can I just say, I may puke the next time I hear someone refer to a child who was internationally adopted as a status symbol?  I mean wtf is wrong with people.  I don't understand all the hate for IA.
