I don't know, I've never seen anything saying either way. My cousin, who at the time had a 3 mo old, said she had painted her little girl's toenails but then felt guilty and took it off.
My niece is 3 and she loves getting her nails painted. I want to say they've been painting her nails off/on for a year or so now. I just can't remember ever seeing a baby w/ painted nails.
You should get some interesting responses. I'm not planning to polish DD's nails anytime soon. Maybe elementary school? I remember my mom doing my nails around that age - a pale pink color. It was a special treat. I've seen little girls at the pool, as young as 8 months with their toes and fingernails painted. I'm not even sure how they sit still long enough to have it done. My cousin takes his DD for routine manicures and she'll be 5 this fall. I personally think that's a bit much.
I'm thinking when she can ask for it? Or maybe for a special occasion after she's 2?
I think I agree with this. I'm in the same camp w/ the ear piercing thing. If she wants it someday when she's old enough (or when I deem her old enough) she can.
Whoa. She's 2 1/2 and we haven't been there yet. I'm not a fan of nail polish anyway. Maybe clear when she's old enough to ask? But she's too busy doing other things to really be interested in cosmetics yet. LOL!
Not too early, my initial response was 5 or so, but I guess if they want to play dress up or something a light shade of something when they are 3 or 4 is ok.
My sister and I (not her mom) painted my nieces toe nails when she was 2. She wanted her fingernails painted as well, but she sucks her thumb, so we thought we'd just stick with the toes. She loved it and oohed and ahhed over the pretty pink toes and wanted to show them to everyone. We probably should have asked my sister (her mom) if it was okay, but that is just one of the many things we do that is "special" as her aunts.
And I fully expect that once my babies are here, my sister will pay me back (eye roll) for all the things that I allowed my niece to do without her permission!
Personally, I think I would do it as a special treat once she is old enough to understand what it is and ask for it (so, maybe 3?). I don't think I would do it routinely until late elementary or even middle school, and obviously only if she wanted it.

Same here. ?If she wants it I think that is fine. ?I DO agree with PP who didn't do hands because of putting hands in her mouth. ?For that reason I would stick with toes.?
I'm okay with toenails polished when they see mine polished and want theirs done. My toes are never bare, so I assume it wont take her long to show interest. I have no problem with a light pink on little girls, but we'll probably hold off on the fire engine red ;-)
I don't wear fingernail polish, and don't care for it on little girls. For some reason toes are okay with me, but fingers aren't. Who knows...
Now, ear piercing? Caroline will not get her ears pierced until she is old enough to take care of them herself.
Honestly unless you are polishing it black or deep red, I think any age is fine. I think little girls with pink nail polish is cute and almost all little girls love playing dress up and feeling like big girls!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

We're having a little girl in December so I don't have one yet, but I would think I'd do it as a "special treat" when she asks for it. Just a light pink though!
Maybe for a fun special occasion now and then (when she's old enough to enjoy playing dress up), but I wouldn't be taking her out to get pedicures until she's maybe 9 or 10, and then would just be a special treat. I really do look forward to getting pedis together when she's older. I love it when I see moms and daughters doing this at my nail place.
I'm only half joking but I'm thinking I'll do it when I'm painting mine and they come over and ask me to do theirs. I think I'll have a nice soft pink laying around, waiting .

I painted Claire's toes while she was sleeping at 4 1/2 months. My cousins were over with their 2 yr old daughters and all of the girl cousins got their toenails painted dark pink. I have to say that they looked really cute with their little toes painted and lined up on the beach. I haven't considered an actual age for fingernails. My 9 yr old stepdaughter loves her nails painted, but I'm the bad guy when I make her take the polish off because she chips at it. I think it looks bad when kids walk around with polish half on/half off and chipped away. I have no issue with toes. Mine are always painted.

it's not really my thing to paint or pierce babies. i'm in the "when she'd old enough to know what it is and ask for it" and on her toes only camp. as for piercing more like 10+ if she reallllly wants them pierced and can take care of them. i had mine done around then and i remember it feeling like a really special sort of rite of passage.
I'm in the minority...but I also don't have a girl. I could see doing it for special occassions on toes at any age. Fingers, no. That said, I haven't worn nailpolish in years.

Call me a bad mom, but I already did (about 3 weeks ago - while she was sleeping). When she saw her toes she kept touching them and giggling. It was too cute.
I also had her ears pierced at 10 months.

I don't really get the connection between painting toenails and piercing ears. I'm not going to pierce Campbell's ears until she's old enough to ask b/c it's permanent, but I think painting her toenails would be no big deal.
In fact, just last week I took my 4 year old niece for her first pedicure. My husband had taken her brother to Atlanta for the Braves game so I took her for a "girl treat". She loved it and keeps asking when we're going back. I think it's cute for a treat...

Whenever she'll let you. My cousins polished their baby's at 5mos. I thought it was kinda weird, but cute. Frankly i just hadn't thought about it.
Tried to polish DD's a few weeks ago (8mos) and she wouldn't let us...so i'll wait.
I know that 3 months is NOT the answer in MY book. My mom thought it would be cute, and CHIT HIT THE FAN !!
I'm thinking 3? Like, if she notices it, and asks for it, and I can bribe her with it? lol....

wow. hadn't even thought about all these questions that we'll be faced with as the girls get older!
i'd say like one of the other posters said, when she can ask to have it done and then only for special occassions?
