rolling over = crazy appetite?

Two major things have happened in the past couple of days, Warner has started rolling over and we started him on rice cereal. And he is ravenous all the time now! I was giving him around 6-7 ozs 5 times a day. But just in the last couple of days--since he started rolling over--he has started pitching a fit when he's done with his bottle. So today I upped his bottles to 8-8.5 ozs and he's fine.

Also, he scared the crap out of me this morning because I looked at the video monitor and he had rolled over onto his tummy while swaddled! I guess we really have to wean him from that now :-( Oh boy...

Re: rolling over = crazy appetite?

  • I have heard that making developmental milestones does increase appetite and decrease sleep, but I have nothing to back that up! As for unswaddling, good luck! It was a month and a half long process to go completely from swaddle to unswaddled in an open crib for us with a couple of really tough weeks in there, but it is worth it and they do figure it out eventually. I love not being in a panic when the miracle blanket is in the wash and we have to distract her to keep her up until it dries!

  • I know it's nerve wracking but DS slept on his belly swaddled for a bit.  He was good at rolling and really comfortable that way.  He still often sleeps on his belly with his arms by his sides.

  • Might be a growth spurt.  We switched to sleep sacks when he could roll.

At what age did he start doing this? Last night he kept rolling over onto him tummy, but he wasn't falling asleep--he wasn't fussing but he was just laying there kind of flailing his legs. So I kept going in and turning him over because I (of course) am all worried about SIDS and "back is best". I was going nuts last night because he's been sleeping through the night without a peep for 2 and half months and all of a sudden, now that he can roll over, he's mr. activity. At one point I went in because I could see on the monitor that he was trying to roll and when I went in he was asleep sucking away on his paci--but still trying to roll over!!

And the lack of sleep is so apparent this morning. I had him in the bumbo seat trying to feed him his rice cereal and he was all slouched over the side and would fuss whenever I tried to straighten him up. And I just put him down for his morning nap an hour early.

  • The book Touchpoints by Dr. Brazleton talks about developmental time frames where babies go through growth spurts/new developmental milestones when they tend to sleep less/eat more ect.  It's a great read.  4 months is one of the "touchpoint" periods.  As far as the rolling over Xander just started to consistently roll over a lot more around 5 months but never figured out how to do it swaddled (thankfully).  We now just this week are fully weaned from swaddling at night which has impacted his sleep at all.  I tried to wean earlier and he just wasn't having it.  He now sleeps in a sleep sack which he can roll over in but from all the reading I've done once they can roll over the changes of SIDS decreases a lot.

  • If I remember correctly we moved him out of his MB and into a sleep sac around 4ish plus months mostly because he was working his way out of his MB.  He was always wanting to be a belly sleeper from the very beginning.  It took some adjustment on my part, (I bought the Angel Care Monitor) but he slept so much better that way.
