Group B Strep Test and Scheduled C/S

This may well be a dumb question, but... I am having a scheduled c/s, but my OB said he was going to do the GBS test at my appt. this week.  I didn't think to ask him at the time, but-- Why?  I thought it was only passed during a vaginal delivery? (Right?, or am I wrong about that?)  I don't care about the test in and of itself, but since I have to take DS to the appt, I'd prefer to skip the hassle of getting undressed and all if it's not "really" necessary to do the test.

  • I would do it just to know in case anything should happen that you do have some off the wall unexpected quick vaginal delivery.  I'm sure it's happened to someone.

But your'e right, it should not otherwise matter.

  • Group B Strep tests are done on c-section patients as a precaution. If your water breaks prior to you having the c-section and you're positive, there is a *small* chance that you could still infect your LO. Honestly, it just makes the pediatricians happy.

Since having DS C/S I have 2 Scheduled C/S and have gotten the GBST done.

  • Oh, and I just had mine done yesterday and will be having a repeat c-section on 3 September. It's really no big deal. Just make sure you're, ahem, prepared. LOL

  • I guess that makes sense about the water breaking.  It's just the hassle of getting undressed... I prefer to keep my appointments under 30 seconds whenever possible. Wink

  • I totally understand. Yesterday's appt. was the longest one I've had in a while. Not only did I have to have the GBS, but I also had to have an internal. Super.

Word of advice - if they ask if you'd had any pain, just say no. I had some back pain yesterday afternoon and mentioned that I had sporadic BH and lucky me!

Obviously, there was NADA going on up there. I was all kinds of bitter b/c that was one thing I thought for sure I wouldn't have to endure b/c of the repeat c. Not fun.

  • Are you serious?  That's so annoying.  I am in no way having any internals.  I didn't have any when I was pg w/ DS and planning on a vaginal delivery anyway.  What's the point (esp. w/ a c/s)?

(I mean, what's the point if they're not checking for something in particular, like in your case.)

Exactly. I was told by my regular OB that she doesn't do internals on c-section patients b/c there's really no point. Hell, she doesn't even start them with regular patients until 39 weeks (unless there are other issues, obviously).

However, she was out yesterday, so I saw one of her partners, who's totally old school.
