Detroit Babies

::MrsRenee::

I just saw your post below that you had a c/s and they still gave your LO a course of antibiotics because of your penicillin allergy.  If you don't mind sharing, did your water break?  Is this why they gave the antibiotics?  I am having a planned c/s, GBS positive, and allergic to penicillin as well.  I was under the impression that antibiotics would not be needed if a c/s was done.  I think we are using the same medical practice as well.  Just curious and I will definately ask at my next appt.  TIA.

Re: ::MrsRenee::

  • My c/s was unplanned due to a failed induction, so they had already broken my water which is why I was on the antibiotics.  I'm pretty sure they said that next time, with a scheduled c/s, I won't need any unless my water breaks.

    As far as DS, he was born wheezing.  It's not unusual in c/s babies but they said it's sometimes an indication of infection.  It took him a little longer to clear that up than they wanted to see, so given the fact I was GBS positive and unable to be on penicillin, they decided to give him antibiotics.  Had he not had the wheezing or had that cleared up relatively quick, it sounds like they wouldn't have done the antibiotics.

  • Thanks so much for sharing.  I was GBS negative with DS so this is all new to me.  They haven't done my swab yet but I have had multiple positive urine tests come back so they consider me positive until delivery.  This is one of the main reasons I opted to go repeat c-section as opposed to VBAC.  I'm glad that everything turned out well with your LO and that he apparently wasn't allergic to the penicillin.
