Parenting after a Loss

Has anyone traveled with a newborn?

DH's plant is closing and we are being tranferred to VA. They have agreed to let us stay here until the end of Sept. I am due Sept 2. So we need to find a house after DS is born. The travel time is about 4 hours. Did any of you have to travel with a newborn? How old were they? How did it go? Any tips?

Re: Has anyone traveled with a newborn?

  • We travelled 2.5 hours away to my MILs (she can't travel to us) when DD was 2 weeks old. The trip went fine! At that age, they sleep so much, it's easy. Just be sure you bring plenty of diapers/changes of clothes just in case, and plan frequent stops for changing/feeding. What is normally a 2.5 hour drive took us almost an extra hour, but the trip overall was easy. Good luck!

  • Traveled last weekend when DD was 5 wks 2 days.  She did great...slept most of car ride.  We had a 5 hr drive and we stopped once to feed her and other than that, she pretty much slept.
  • We didn't, but Aidan was such an easy going newborn who slept ALL THE TIME that it wouldn't have been a problem at all. Seriously, he slept like 23 hours a day! Anyways, good luck and I'm sure it will be just fine!

  • Where in VA will you be?  At <4 weeks, baby will probably sleep most of the time.  Stop every few hours as your baby needs; don't let your DH "push on through."  Pump a couple of bottles to have in case you get stuck in traffic and can't stop to nurse.

FWIW, we made an offer on a house when DD was 2 weeks old and moved when she was 6-9 weeks.  We survived, but everything took much longer than I anticipated.  Pack as much as you can before your LO arrives -- I had so much more time and energy while pg than I did with a newborn.

  • MrsRoehl, Thankfully Dh's company is paying for movers to pack us and move us. So that is a bright spot. We are moving to Richmond. I am very excited about the move just not excited about the horrible timing! Where are you?

  • We went to MI from OH which was a 4.5 hr drive when Ava was 3 week old and then the week after that we traveled to FL by plane and she did great. The trip to MI we fed and burped her before leaving and she slept the whole time and on the way home she woke up once to eat. She did great on both trips. DD FF so I packed plenty of bottles and extra formula incase she was extra hungry and extra wipes and diapers. On the plane she slept both to and from on both flights each way. You should be good to go because your LO would still be in the sleeping stage.

I wish I had had that luxury!  It will make your life so much easier.  I'm in the DC suburbs... Alexandria.  I understand your concerns about timing; it was great to be able to unpack and set up our new house while on maternity leave, because there is no way I could do that while working; but part of me feels like I didn't really have time off.  Good luck!

  • I traveled with DS at 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months, 10 months.  Actually we did a corporate relocation when he was 3 months - so I've been where you are.  I'm actually glad we did it when he was younger, if he had been older it would have been much harder.  He was sleeping so much at that point that I could get a lot done.

At that age they sleep all the time, so I think it will be easy.  Are you flying or driving?  If you fly, bring a bottle or plan to nurse during takeoff and landing to keep baby's ears from popping.  If driving I would probably just try to leave right after a feeding.  You might have to pull over and nurse or feed a bottle halfway through, but beyond that I bet baby will sleep through the whole thing.

Traveling with DS was very easy until 10 months when he was mobile and wanted to GO GO GO!

  • I drove three hours with M when he was about 8 days old.  Like pp said, just try to coordinate your driving time with nap time.
