1st Trimester

intro and question

Hi...

I just got by BFP yesterday and I am so excited.  I also just scheduled my first dr. appt.  If I have done the math right, I will be due sometime in mid April.

What dr. appts did you make your husband go to?  Mine is running out of days to take off this year and I want to make sure that he is at the "most important" appointments since I know he cannot be at all of them.  Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

Re: intro and question

  • Fortunately, my husband's career is being a student right now so he can go with me to every appointment. But if I had to choose, I would have him go to the any appointments that included an ultrasound. If he can't go to the first appointment, talk about your questions together before you go and write them down and then get with him afterwards and talk about what the nurse or doctor said.

  • I would say def. your appointment around 12 weeks (you will get to hear the heartbeat for the first time) and the one around 20 weeks (this is when it's normal to get an U/S)...I would ask your Dr. though...because some offices give you an U/S to date your pregnancy and such earlier than 20 weeks...and I know I would want my DH with me for that!

Edit: We heard the heartbeat (via doppler) at our first appointment at 10w6d?

  • Thanks for the advice.  He is trying to get the time off to go to the first one (my fingers are crossed)
  • If you do an NT scan those are good to have the hubbs at because you see so much.  the 20 week is also a biggie... otherwise i'd save it for the end because you'll get spacy and forget to ask things, it's nice to have an extra brain to remember what to ask and what they tell you.
  • BF & I agreed that he would go to any ultrasound appointments and other appointments deemed important by my OB. She requested him at the family history appointment, for example. He's accompanying me to the NT Scan appointment. Otherwise, monthly check-ups last all of 30-45 minutes, and I can't ask him to take time off for such a short check-up.

If it helps, you can bring a recorder (ask your doc if it's ok with him/her) and record the conversation between the doctor and you. Or, you can call your DH and have him on speaker during the appointment; again, check with your doctor for approval.

  • Congrats!

The only appointment my husband gets to go to (because he's deploying at the end of the month) is my first prenatal where they do the physical, pap, and check on the baby. He was supposed to go with me to the OB intake appointment, but I'm glad he didn't because there was no need for him to be there. It was just blood work, family history, and a urine sample.

  • For our first, DH came to ultrasounds (separately scheduled from regular appointments).  He also came to a few at the end when I had some blood pressure issues and was on modified bed rest (had to drive me there).  The family hisotry questions were pretty basic (any history of birth defects in the family) and I didn't need him there to answer that.
