1st Trimester

first appointment tomorrow! but wtf?

So the Dr.'s office just called to confirm for tomorrow morning, and I asked the girl if I would be getting an ultrasound, because I will be 9w5d, and she got all evasive and all she would say was "maybe."

Maybe?  Do they only decide to do one if they feel like it that day?  If the Dr. says he's not going to do one, can I request one anyway?  Does anybody know why they would say this?  I'm kinda mad!  I want a picture to give to my MIL!  Grrrrr!!

Re: first appointment tomorrow! but wtf?

  • Most of the time, the people that work the phones don't know what goes on at each appt. - especially because in a lot of cases, it varies from doctor to doctor.

You can probably request an u/s if the doctor doesn't do one, but you'll probably have to 1) make an appt. for it and come back for it, and 2) pay for it out of pocket, since a lot of insurances don't cover multiple u/s, especially if your doctor doesn't call for it.

  • Hmmm, I wouldn't expect an u/s at your 1st appt unless there is a medical need for one.
  • That makes perfect sense, I just thought they did one for everyone to verify theres actually a baby in there!

  • :)

Maybe, I guess it all depends on the doctor.  My 1st appt will be at the 9 week mark and they told me it was the appt where you meet with the nurses and go over medical history and they might so an exam...but they didn't mention anything about an u/s.

  • In my WTEWYE book it says that generally an u/s IS performed on the first visit "to determine the viability of the pregnancy"....but maybe there are other ways to determine that..i.e. blood test, etc.

I will be having an u/s at my first appt and I will be about 8.5 weeks then.

GL!  I hope you can finagle an u/s!

  • This might be a dumb question because I really don't know the difference between a doppler and an ultrasound if their is one but don't they at least check for a heartbeat??  Do you have to have an u/s to hear a heartbeat?  My first appointment is at 9 weeks and I had my heart set on hearing the heartbeat!  It's the light at the end of my m/s tunnel! lol

  • Doppler is when they hear the HB through your tummy.  Usually they would do a vaginal ultrasound to hear and see the HB this early.  They didn't use the doppler on me unitl about 12 weeks my last preg.

I may be wrong but I think the doppler picks up the actual sound of the heart beating whereas the u/s you can SEE the heartbeat and then the sound is mimicked by the u/s machine.  Maybe someone else on here can confirm that.

  • From what I've read, I think you should be able to "see" the hb flickering with an ultrasound before you "hear" it with a doppler, so I would assume they would do a transvaginal ultrasound first.  But I guess every Dr. is different.

  • My insurance covers medically necessary ultrasounds; they have deemed the NT scan and the 20-week scan medically necessary.  It will only cover an early ultrasound if there is a special reason for it -- bleeding or to confirm due date if your cycles are not regular, for instance.  My OB follows the same policy -- no early ultrasound unless there is a special reason.  And, they don't have the equipment in-house, so I actually have to go to a separate center for any.

  • In the city where I live, only one OBGYN has an ultrasound in his office.  The others rely on a traveling ultrasound or send patients to one of the imaging centers in town.  We have like 7 OBGYNs in town.  The other thing is, lots of insurance companies will only cover 1 USper pregnancy.  It's more important to do one later when things are further along so they wait. I know, it's hugely diappointing.  I was hoping for an US to determine exactly how far along I am, because it's a little up in the air.

  • I have been wondering the same question lately so I am glad to here everyone's advice.

  • I'm not sure what your office does, but mine did the US last week and they did measure the HB by looking at the flickers (I was 7 weeks and 3 days).  I didn't have to do it vaginally either they just did it right on my stomach.  I think it just depends on the US tech.  He said he wanted to do vaginally, but I was like let's just try the stomach first and it worked.

  • As a few people have said it all has to do with what you insurance covers.  Most it is 1 U/S unless medically necessary (i.e. fibroids, history of a loss, bleeding, etc) They do the bloodwork and pee test first and if all levels are normal and you have had no history of problems then chances are you are not labeled high risk and won't get an ultrasound.  The front desk girl can not tell you whether or not you will have one because you need to wait for your levels to come back.  So don't get your panties in a wad and get mad at the doctor office - get mad at the insurance companies.  I guess that would be a whole other blog - right!  LOL Good luck at your appointment and be happy if all your levels come back great and you don't need an early U/S as much as I know you want one!
  • At my appointment today they didn't do a u/s or Doppler. They confirmed the pregancy via a urine test and also the midwife could feel through my abdomen that my uterus was growing and enlarged. They will do a u/s int he next 4 weeks sometimes as a diagnostic test to see check for signs of downs.

  • I don't think it is standard to get a U/S in early pregnancy. Most of the time, it is to confirm pregnancy or EDD (as was my case with this pregnancy) or to confirm the ongoing health of the baby. They may not do one for you this time, because it may not be necessary in their mind. And, as my nurse told me at 6 weeks - they haven't determined the effects of U/S on infants and, therefore, do not like to give too many...
