Anyone else not seeing a doctor until 8 weeks?

My current ob/gyn was fine enough for my yearly paps, but I am not quite sure I want her to be my obstetrician. I have another doctor highly recommended who I called today to schedule an appointment and they said that they usually wait until the patient is between 8 to 10 weeks along before having the first ob appointment. I would get an exam, an ultrasound and all the b/w and tests all at once.
I currently have an appointment this thursday at my old office, in which I plan to cancel. I am hesistant though because what if through the exam and b/w they find something wrong right away? I won't get an ultrasound of course but I could at least get b/w done.
What would you do? Cancel with old doctor this thursday and hae a fresh start with the new one at 8 weeks? Keep thursday appointment with old doctor AND start with my new doctor at 8 weeks (I would be paying for one visit out of pocket).
Is it really really necessary to have an appointment before the first ultrasound?

I've read that it's not important, and is very common. I got BW yesterday. I have no idea when they'll schedule me for an exam or u/s. I will let you know just for reference. I don't know if they jumped to the bw b/c of my thyroid or if they would have done it anyway...I wouldn't pay out of pocket.
If you are going to switch, go w/that Dr. and maybe just call again, and say you're concerned, it's stressing you out and you would feel better if they could do a beta draw.
I had my first apt. at seven and a half weeks. It's pretty common now.

8 to 10 weeks sounds normal! Unless there are current or previous complications usually doctors won't see you until 8 to 10 weeks. With my first pregnancy I did have a appointment until 10 weeks, with the second that ended in miscarriage I was not scheduled until 8 weeks. With this pregnancy I did not see her until 9 weeks (I did have several blood tests and a ultrasound though because of the previous miscarriage..but I did not actually see the doc. until 9)
I would suggest that you go to your appointment at the old doctor first, and then switch for the 8 week appointment. My ob/gyn had me come it at 6 weeks to take blood and urine tests to confirm everything and test all my levels (I knew I was pregnant, but it was comforting to hear a health professional agree). We also talked all about my questions, fears, etc. I found it very helpful and comforting (it's my first pregnancy).
Then, you can go to your sonogram at 8 weeks. If you're like me at all, it will make you feel much better to see someone now. Why not go twice? Just my opinion.
I am in sort of the same boat as you. I switched to a new OBGYN closer to where I live and my first appointment isn't until 8 weeks. That appointment is with a nurse and I don't believe I'll be getting an u/s until later. However, I am going to call and ask for one since I'm not positive how far along I am.
If I were in your situation I would probably go to the appointment with your old doctor and then have your file sent to the new doctor for the 8 week appointment. Seeing a doctor earlier sure would make me feel better!

When I first made my appointment it was for about 7 1/2 weeks and they would not do it any earlier BUT I have been spotting and bleeding (probably not good) and so I am going in today. :-(

I have whats considered a "normal" pregnancy, no prior history etc. My 1st appt will be at 9 weeks and a few days. I won't even get an u/s then. That will be a few weeks later.
So, I think you're right on track.
I'm going in at 8 weeks. I had bloodwork done right away through my old practice (I switched too) and that confirmed the pregnancy but then they wouldn't see me until 9 weeks for u/s and pap. Now in the new practice I'm going in at 8 weeks for internal u/s, pap and bloodwork

My OB intake appointment was at 8 weeks, and my first prenatal appointment is at 12 weeks. The Army is painfully slow and does things a little differently from "normal" doctors from what I've been reading here in 1st Tri.
My 8 week appointment was just family history, b/w, urine sample, and seeing the Tricare referral lady to get my referral to go over to the hospital. My 12 week appointment is the pap, physical, and fundal height measurement. I'm going to ask them for a dating ultrasound and about the NT scan then.
Though I guess part of it is my fault for not being psychic and taking a test before July 2nd which was probably around 25DPO. *facepalm*
