Infertility

Weird ques. about weight.

My BFF suffers from POS and have been TTC for over a year.  She's just about given up and convinced herself that she cannot because of her weight.  I'm trying to get her to see a fert. specialist.  Will they say her weight is a major factor or give her hope.  I don't want to bring her spirits down anymore.  I just want so much for her and she's soooo wonderful.  Okay, I'll stop because I'm about to cry.

Re: Weird ques. about weight.

  • 1.)  Do you mean PCOS?

2.)  We can't guess what her doctor would say about her weight.  Every doctor has a different opinion on weight and TTTC.

3.)  Don't push her.  She will seek help when she is ready.

  • Maybe....she has polycystic ovarian syndrome.

That's what I'm worried about (diff opinions)...she's been pretty much the same size her whole life and now she's considering surgery for weight loss for pregnancy.

  • Without knowing how overweight she is, but assuming it must be somewhat significant if she is considering surgery, then there is a chance that the specialist would suggest losing weight.  But it sounds like this wouldn't be news to her.  If she has a diagnosis of PCOS, then she of course has other IF issues and seeing a specialist is a good idea.  It may be that her weight has nothing to do with her IF.  But like the PP said, she will have to reach this decision herself.  It sounds like you are being a good friend to her, supporting her and that you've made this suggestion.

  • Sounds like your friend is pretty overweight.  The doctor will probably say something about her needing to lose weight but you never know.  I am overweight, not severely, and my doctor didn't say anything to me.  I'm more worried about it than she is.  She will make a decision that she thinks is best for her and you just have to be there to support her.  Sounds like you are a great friend though.

  • I don't have PCOS, but I am overweight and my RE has never said anything about my weight except when I flat out asked her if it's because of my weight that I cannot conceive.  She told me that's not the reason whatsoever, but it would good for me to lose weight for many reasons (obviously.)

I agree with PP, don't push your friend - she'll go to an RE when she's ready - but I do wish her lots of luck!
