Advice for Temper Tantrums?

Grace is 14 months but it seems like she is already going through the terrible 2's.  If we tell her no or take her hand off something/ pick her up to get her to stop, she arches her back and throws her head against the floor.  Her other MO is to run away and slam a cabinet door or throw something agaist the floor and scream.

My husband wants to spank her and I'm not totally against the idea in general but I do think she is way too young right now to understand anything other than her dad is hurting her.  She's not learning the bigger lesson.  Also, she is trying to drop a nap so she is also overly tired which of course brings on the tantrums.

Is this typical at this age?  Any advice?  We really don't want to raise a brat.

  • DS is doing the same thing!  it is pretty typical though according to my pedi.  He says it is not actually terrible 2's.  It goes from 1-4 years old, UGH!  We have learned to ignore his tantrums.  He tests us often and we continue to just ignore him/take away the object/etc...  We tried the hand smacking or little butt spank and he just started hitting us so we stopped that FAST!!  He is overall a good kid but he does push our buttons often, LOL!  Good luck!
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

  • welcome to my world :)

actually my friend gets a newsletter from childrens hospital and they have a class in there about tantrums.  i am going to call today and i will post about it.

  • We're already there.  Ugh.  He is obsessed with my cell phone.  Yesterday he threw a temper tantrum while I was on the phone with my FIL.

We've started putting him in the PNP for a time out for a minute or two while he calms down.  He doesn't like it, but is much happier when we pick him up.  When we pick him up, we hug and kiss him, tell him we love him, and  distract him with something new.  So far this has happened twice.

  • We felt like Ethan was getting frustrated not being able to communicate and we really started focusing on signing.  I think it has helped, and he has really picked up on signs the last month or so.  HTH!
