Poll: How many SAHM's... if not what do you do?

I've been lucky enough to be a SAHM for the last 15 months with DS and hopefully we'll be able to continue to just get by without me working.  DH doesn't want our DS to ever be in daycare so if/when I do go back to work it would be super part-time and would have to work around DH's crazy work schedule.

I'm just curious how many other SAHM's there are around here... if you do work what do you do?  Do you have a career?  Or a regular job? Do you work full time or part time?  Do you have daycare/ family care or trade off with DH?

  • I am as of last Friday a housewife until baby comes.. then I will be a stay at home mom!  I was a preschool teacher for the last 8 1/2 years. :)

  • I'm not sure what I am... I was laid off during my maternity leave, but I had intended to return part-time. I do public health research. I am now job-hunting, because I still want to go back to work. While we don't want to put DD in day care, we need the $$ and we really need the health insurance. We have talked about arranging our work schedules so that there is only one or two days where DD would need care, and my parents have offered to do it. But I don't know if my future job would be so flexible as my last one, so we are also on a daycare waitlist.

Now that I don't have to return to work in exactly 12 weeks, I'm hoping we can delay me going back until DD is six months old, but we'll see... :: fingers crossed the economy turns around so we can live on DH's income::

In an ideal world, DH would be a SAHD and I'd go back full-time, but living on my income would be really tight.  :(

  • I work in retail part-time, but our kids don't go to daycare. My MIL watches them one day a week and my DH watches them the other two that I work. I like getting out of the house a couple of days a week. I think I would go crazy being a full-time SAHM. I totally respect those that do it, it just isn't for me!

  • I'm a nurse, work full time nights 3 nights a week.  12 hour shifts.  DD will go to my mom and dad's with me during the day, I will sleep in my old room for a few hours while she hangs out with gma and gpa and then I will go home :)  Should work out.  MIL, my grandma and some aunts and uncles are all willing to watch her should the need arise as well.  When I get a day shift position it will probably be a similar situation :)

  • I know that you don't mean it like this...but please be careful how you guys talk about daycare.  Not everyone can (or wants to) SAH, and not everyone has family close by to babysit, so for many, daycare is the only option.  I *hate* dropping her off at daycare, it's awful to leave your baby with a stranger.

I'm back at work 3 days a week and B goes to daycare on those 3 days.

Sorry I'm bitter-sounding, I just wish that my Mom or MIL was able to babysit 24/7 for us. Sad

  • The_Jen I'm sorry if I offended in any way.  I was just asking if you don't SAH how you work with daycare or family etc.  I wish I had the option to leave DS with family, but since we moved here that's not an option and because of DH's crazy schedule I can't have him watch our little guy either.  Honestly, I wish I could go back to work part-time we could really use the help financially and eventually we may not have an option.

No prob!  I'm just super sensitive and hormonal about it.  I know you didn't mean any offense, and on a normal day I wouldn't have been offeneded.

  • I am a homemaker and will be for the next 18+ yrs.  However I may go back to work part time at some point..it depends on how many kids we end up with in our family.  I help out my friends who work part time with their kids and so they can help me when I have appointments.

  • I'm a SAHM. I was going to stay home for 6 months but it has been extended to who knows how long. I have no desire to go back to my old career, so for now we're just sticking to a budget to make it on one income. I pick up random contract jobs here and there that I can do out of the home for extra $.
