1st Trimester

creative ways to keep it a secret

Here's another one for you gals.  We are going to keep our pregnancy quiet until closer to the end of our 1st tri, but I have several events coming up that would usually involve drinking.  My sister said she used to pretend to drink her bottle of beer & then switch bottles w/ her DH when she was 1st KU.  This doesn't work for me as I never drink beer.   What have you done so that others don't notice you're not drinking?

  • Ditto pp.  If you have something colorful in a glass, especially if it has a fruit garnish, probably no one will question what it actually is.

  • We were at a wedding and I just said that I was the DD so I wasn't drinking. You could also say you are on antibiotics and don't want to mix. That is a classic.

  • You might just say you're getting over a bug and don't feel up to drinking yet or that you're taking some medication.  I haven't had any questions of me yet but I've been prepared with the sinus meds. line.
  • DH's Dad and his wife were visiting all weekend and we made sure to sit next to one another at dinner and while I pretended to sip my wine, DH would take bigger sips and switch our glasses constantly. . . it worked, but he felt a bit more buzzed than usual, so next time we'll try to make sure they don't refill his glass so much!! I just said I was fine with one glass.
  • I've used the sinus med excuse already this past weekend, so maybe I'll stay on that train.  I can just say it continued & developed into an infection so w/ antibiotics I don't want to drink.  All my friends are well aware I get this problem, so they won't think twice when I say it.

  • I was at a wedding Saturday and just asked for soda water with a lime in a cocktail glass. Everyone assumed I was drinking alcohol. Usually they use different glasses if it has alcohol- just ask the bartender to use the cocktail glass for your drink. With champagne, pretend to take a sip and put it close to your DH's glass, have him take sips of both so they both seem to be getting less full.
  • I say I'm on Weight Watchers and that I'd rather spend my points on X (small piece of cake, special entree) than on booze.  You'd have to eat heathly otherwise to pull this off, though.  No downing chips and cookies.

  • I'm also not a beer drinker.  I would drink cranberry juice and sprite - and have it in a coctail glass with a straw.  Works like a charm!  And it's not too bad!  :)
  • I tell people I'm hung over from the night before haha
  • I guess I'm the only one who hasn't had this problem and I'm known as a wine-o in my circle. ?A few weeks before I found out I was pregnant I organized a happy hour get together. ?I just found out I was pregnant when we had the get together. ?Not a single person (out of 9 people) called me out for not drinking at happy hour. ?

When someone does question you, wouldn't a "I don't feel like drinking tonight" work??
