Baby Names

Is Max becoming really popular?

Or versions of it (Maxwell etc)?  Do you know any babies named "Max" for real (not on the Nest)?

DH is pretty sold on naming LO this, and I do like the name, but want to make sure it's not going to be the next "Aidan" (and no disrespect to those who have babies named Aidan or are having babies named Aidan, we just tend to like names that are a bit on the uncommon side).

 ???

Re: Is Max becoming really popular?

  • Yes, it's very popular, but it's a nice name.

  • I know a baby named Max. ?I don't see it becoming the next Aiden because I think Max is still an old-school, classic name. ?Even if it gets more popular, it will not be "trendy".
  • Not only is it super popular as a name (short for Maxwell, Maddox, Maximus, Maximilian, Maxim) it's the most popular name for both dogs and cats as well.
  • Yes, sorry but it is popular IRL.  I do know two little boys named Max that are babies.  There was also a Max in the 3rd grade classroom across the hall from me last year.

  • Yes, Max is becoming and is currently a popular name right now.

  • I am in the minority, but the only Max I know is my grandfather. I haven't met any babies with the name. I would check on the popularity of the name in your specific area... it may not be as common as it is in other areas.

Yes, very. I do know one little boy named Max, although he is probably about 5yo now.
  • I like Max, but I think it might be a little trendy.

And, as another poster mentioned, it's pretty popular for pets. I think there's a sizable chunk of the pet-owning population that likes to name pets people names that are fresh, fun, good names and nicknames that don't have to be versatile. Think Max, Cody, Jack, Toby, Sam, Abby, Chloe, Eddie, etc. You name a kid one of these names, and you're bound to here "My cat growing up was..." or "My neighbor's dog is named..."

  • Becoming popular?  I think it already is.  When I taught kindergarten a few years ago, we used to joke that every grade had two Max's- and it just about did.  I think ever since Gladiator came out, it spread like wildfire.  Maybe it's just my area.
  • I don't know anyone named Max.  And so what if it's too popular.  If you like it, go for it.

The area has to have something to do with it.  I don't know ANYONE with a kid named Max near me.  I'm sure teachers are way more familiar with "trendy" names, but I suspect some of this to be depending on the area as well...

Just checked my state on the ssa website adn Max or any version of it is not even in the top 100... hmmm....

  • My SS is Maxson and of couse we call him Max for short. I only know one other boy named Max though. I think the name is for sure more popular than it was a few years ago, but I still don't think it's huge. Have you checked to see if was in the top 100 last year (or if it was where it fell)?

  • I was curious myself and checked...in 2008 Max was # 126, right between Marcus and Patrick. The next "Max" name was Maddox at 208...
