Anyone watch another little one in your home?

If so, would you mind sharing what you charge? I am considering doing this for a friend, and I'm trying to decided if it is worth it. It would probably only be 2 days a week, I don't want to do any more than that. Her baby would be 3 months old when I start watching it, if that makes a difference. I have absolutely no idea what a reasonable rate is. Thanks!

Re: Anyone watch another little one in your home?

  • totally depends on location. From what i have seen 35.00/day for in-home daycare is average. (suburbs of philadelphia)

  • I'm very seriously considering it.  We paid our nanny $75/day, but she came to us (before I started SAH).  I wouldn't charge that much, because I would watch the child here (not at their home).  I was thinking something more like $50-60/day, depending on how many hours they needed me.

It also depends on the COL of your area.

ETA:  I would only look to do this 2 or 3 days as well.  I don't want to commit to 5 days a week.

  • I do it 2 days a week and the child is the same age as my DD and comes to my house. I get 75/day which is very generous. Daycare here runs about 50/day. It's hard work so I don't do it more than 2 days a week.
  • I guess things are cheaper here in Canada...the going rate seems to be around 28-35 dollars a day. I charge 30...but since you are watching an infant, you'd be able to charge more because of the extra care needed!

  • I will be once my DS arrives.  It's a friend of ours as well, a little girl who is due about 3 weeks before me (I know, I'm crazy!).  We agreed on $200 for 4 days (so $50/day).  We were very good about negotiating on the price though.

In St. Louis, she would pay the same for a day care (maybe slightly less at some of them), but felt it was worth the money to have me watch her.  She knows I'll care for her in a way a day care can't and they live just a couple miles away from us.  For me personally, this was the only way we could financially afford for me to "technically" SAH.

  • Around here (MCOL city) home daycare is around 150/week for infants.

But- I have a friend who advertises AP, organic foods, only takes 1 kid in, etc, and she charges almost twice that.  So if you offer a very specialized service, you can charge more.

I wouldn't charge less just bc it is a friend.  Charge what you think is a fair price for your time.  Personally, I would want to make at least minimum wage.
