When to see an RE?

I know I only stopped taking bcp in February, but my cycles so far have been 42 days, 36 days (ovulated on day 27), 44 days (ovulated on day 33), and so far I am on day 41 with no ovulating.

My doctor said to make an appt for December if I'm not pg by then, but I'm thinking I may have PCOS and would like to make an appt with a fertility specialist beforehand. I contacted my insurance company today and they said I did not need a referral by my ob/gyn before going. WWYD?

 TIA!

even if not TTC, an RE is good to see for PCOS.  if you don't need a referal i would make an appointment as soon as you'd like.  i knew i was pcos and i took my time to get to the RE and really regret it.

Hi there!  Generally, you should see a doctor after a year of TTC.  If you're 35 years old or more, you can go in a 6 months.  Just check if insurance stipulates that you try for a year first.

Your cycle lengths are nothing to be concerned about yet!  It can take way longer than that for your body to regulate after stopping birth control pills.  Don't jump to conclusions yet. :)  There have been many girls on other boards here who have long cycles and got pregnant within that one year norm.

    Good luck!

i forgot to ask - what were cycles like before bcp?  and what other symptoms suggest pcos?

Can't remember what cycles were like before bcp since it was almost 10 years ago since going on them. I could kick myself for not recording that info. I remember really heavy, painful periods, but not sure about cycle length.

I have very, very light periods with many days of spotting before AF. Both parents have type 2 diabetes. Although I'm not overweight (116 lbs at 5'4), I know that doesn't need to be a precursor. Just knowing that I have very long cycles, with what I think is an annovulatory one now, is the biggest factor in thinking something is wrong (PCOS?). I also have a dark patch of "freckles" on my upper arm and my friend is convinced that is a symptown. Not really sure, but would like to know asap because these looong cycles are messing with TTC.

Please don't freak yourself out yet!  Honestly.  You need to chart consistently before deciding you're annovulatory.

Your cycles don't seem that long to me, considering you just went of BCP in February. I'd keep trying a few more months before starting the stress of an RE, unless you're over 35 years old. I went off BCP last October and haven't O'd or had natural period since then (I've had periods from taking provera and clomid). I went to see an RE in June, and we're probably starting IUI next month.
