So far, 4 people have asked us, "So, what are you going to do with the dog now that you're pregnant?" Uhhh....what do you think?? We're just going to give him away now that we have a little one?? Idiots.
I work in a call center for an animal rescue organization. You have no idea how many people call with the excuse that "we have a baby now" and thus they "can't" have a dog. These calls make me sad, though at least now I can make the argument that I'm expecting a baby and I'm going to train my rescue dog to be good with the baby, despite his original behavioral evaluation results, which decrees that he is not to be in a home with children under 12. It can be done, but most people do not want to deal with it.
Because some idiots don't realize that some people love their dogs like family. DH and I have 2 doggy babies, and we're telling people that they're going to be a big sister and big brother!

My mom (and now MIL also) refers to our pets as The Grandpuppy & The Grandkitty She's done this long before I was pregs.
I hate it when people just get rid of pets for no good reason. I know someone who got rid of her dogs when the baby was born because she didnt want the baby to be playing in all that dog hair (she had two tiny little short hair dogs too) In our family, my two Boston Terriers have been the Grandpuppies for a long time already, now we are just adding one more to the mix! Actually my parents are already used to being called Grandma and Grandpa even though this is their first human grandchild
Oh my MIL was the worst! She kept telling me stories where the people's babies got malled by their dogs. The dogs turned on the baby, blah blah. Our dog adjusted wonderfully to the new baby. DD can climb on her and play in her food bowl while she is eating and the dog just sits there. Just ignore the ignorant people. You know your dog and I am sure it will adjust just fine
I have a Great Dane and a Rotteweiler/Lab mix and have no intention of getting rid of either of them. We did just get the Dane spayed, but having lots of tiny puppies and a new baby didn't seem like it would be very much fun. I think my dogs will adjust very well to the baby. We have made sure that they've been around kids their whole life, so they should be fine. Why on earth would people think you should get rid of your pets?
My sister who just had a baby was asked the same thing. The female dog has turned into mother hen and freaks out when she can't find the baby (think Nana from Peter Pan). The male dog isn't as accepting of the baby but he still walks up & sniffs the baby and is slowly coming around. Either way, a baby is not a valid reason to get rid of a pet IMO.
Re: Grrrr, this makes me mad...
Why would someone even say that? That just makes no sense at all. Ugh! Sorry you even were asked that question.
