NBR: Wine country tour?

So, next summer, DH and I are finally going to take our honeymoon! (It will also, I suppose technically be a Babymoon since we're planning to start TTC on it)

We're both wine enthusiasts and want to take some sort of tour around "wine country" probably in CA.  Is there anyone who has either done such a thing or is from the area who can recomend a good place to start looking to make arrangements? Maybe a good (non-cheesy, not a lot of blue hairs) tour company?

 TIA

  • Just google it and see what comes up.  It sounds like a wonderful experience though... Have fun!

  • When we were in Sonoma last month, we avoided tours like the plague. They are way over-priced and sometimes in open-cars and it was HOT, def in the 100's. I advise just going to different wineries and doing their tastings. It's cheaper and you get a lot.  There are plenty in downtown Sonoma, or a lot in the countrysides. Very fun though.
  • I am from the the east bay and I am getting married in St. Helena  (two towns over from Napa).  I have been on the wine train which is great, wine and dinner but also, there are a lot fo B&B's in that are and lots of great wineries, V. Suttui (where we are getting married), Beringer, Peju, Mumm, Stags Leap, etc.  Also, a great place to eat is Go Fish in St. Helena.  If you want a hotel that is great, nice, good prices for the area and new, the Marriott Springhill Suites is awesome (they have a fire pit, pool, exercise room and good bar) . We are staying there for our wedding and they have been great.  They are much cheaper than other places around.  They are on the corner of 29 and 12 and about 18 miles from St. Helena and 10 miles from Napa.  Hope this was helpful
  • Thanks guys! We have plenty of time to plan, so i think i'm going to look into all of them :)

  • FWIW, Ravenswood was my faveeeeeorite winery.
  • I live in NorCal :), you might want to try Mendocino County, Napa County, or Sonoma County.  Healdsburg is a really nice city (DH went to a boarding high school down there) and there are a lot of wineries in that area :D

A friend of mine went down to Mendocino County to do wine tasting events for her 21st birthday (this was four years ago, but she might remember where she went, or her mom might).

  • I live about an hour away from Napa as well.  I agree with Jaime on her suggestions and would add a stop in Yountville.  They have a terrific little french restaurant there (the one across from Villagio) that we had a lingering lunch with wine twice.  Also, in the late afternoon, a glass of wine on the patio of 1857 is a lovely thing to do.  When we did that, there was a musician playing, people casually dancing (laughing lol) and a nice friendly ambience.

Im not an organized tour type person, and prefer to go explore on my own.  That being said, I will ask around for some recs.
