Craigslist Scam!

I am pretty sure that some guy is trying to scam me on Craigslist! I am selling a twin bed to make room for baby girl.  This guy told me he wanted to buy the bed, so I thought - hey, awesome!

He emailed today to say that his secretary "accidentally" sent a check for about $2000 extra. Would I please cash the check and send the rest to his "mover"? WTF???????????

The check just came in the mail. He overnighted it with UPS. CREEPY!!!

  • yup sounds like a scam to me

i'd call your local police dept

  • DO NOT CASH IT!!!!! IT IS FAKE!!!!
  • definitely a scam - they do that to get your account info then wire money out of it and you're screwed. They're usually in a foreign country where it can't be traced.

  • IT IS A SCAM!!!! DONT DO IT!!  I went to sell some rims a few years back. I did a lot of online buying/selling.  I stayed atop of the most common scams and this is one of them.

The so called "buyer" aka the scammer, sends a check for a ridiculous amount and asks you to even keep some of the change and give the rest back. When you cash the check it turns out to be fraudulent and you end up paying the bank back for all that money!!

Tell this guy you changed your mind and send the check back or tell him you are going to rip it up. Report this.

In my case I was selling the rims for $1200 and the person offered to buy them for $4000.

You can google about this type of scam.

  • This scam has been around for years...I used to manage a check cashing facility.  I once had a poor old lady who refused to believe she hadn't won a lottery(which she never entered oddly enough).  She said she would take the check to her bank when they were open so she could withdraw the "taxes" for her winnings and send them back to the company she "won" the money from(as they had requested.  Why they wouldn't have withdrawn them from her winnings before sending the check obviously makes no sense.).  I begged her not to do it.  Unfortunately, if she did, she would be responsible for recouping the withdrawn amount for her bank.  Anyway, as all pp have said, don't cash it.  In fact, I would accept cash only from buyers.  Just a suggestion.  Good luck with your sale!

I sell stuff on Craigslist all the time and this is a very common scam.  Never accept a personal or cashier's check.  If they offer to send you a check and have their mover pickup, it is always a scam.  Tell them to have their mover bring the cash and you will never hear from them again.  Never give anyone on Craigslist your information (name, address, etc).  There are some creepy people out there!  If possible, always meet up in a public place and have someone with you.

  • You really should report this because people in your area have very likely been targeted, too. I would even call your news station and let them know this is going on so that any naive people on Craigslist won't fall victim!
  • DO NOT CASH THE CHECK........DO AS OTHERS HAVE SAID...CALL YOUR LOCAL POLICE DEPT AND GIVE THEM ALL AND ANY INFO YOU HAVE REGARDING THIS MATTER. ASAP!!!
