Help!! DS hates bath time!

My LO hates bath time.  He screams his head off every time.  I've triple checked water temperature, tried putting an extra washcloth on his belly, and reassuring words.  In your experience is this something that just gets better over time, or is there something that you can recommend?

Re: Help!! DS hates bath time!

  • Is he in the water or an a sling above the tub?  Once my LO layed in the tub he LOVED it.  GL

  • my Ds was the SAME way until a month ago.  What worked for me was not having him in the bathroom while the faucet ran (it scared him),  having the water a hair hotter then the little baby thermometer says to, and having a hand towel in the bottom of the infant tub so he feels soft and secure under his butt.   And only filling the baby tub up enough that he is sitting in a couple inches, and putting a warm wet washcloth on his tummy to keep im warm.  I swear it is his FAVORITE thing now.  I would bath him ten times a day if I could where before it was life chinese water torture!!
  • oh ditched the sling too he hated that
  • DD hated bath time in the beginning too.  Then she became ambivilent about it and love after-bath time (lotion and naked time).  We used to have the little bath with a sling and since we got the FP Whale Tub where she can sit up more, DD loves bath time.  We also recently introduced toys in the bath and she loves to bat at them and watch them float.

  • He is in a sling.  I haven't tried taking him out, but I WILL.

    Thanks so much!!

  • I always bathe DS about an hour after I feed him...that way his belly is comfortably full which makes him happy! (I bathe him in the morning, not at night.)

  • Dean hated his baths when he had him in the little mesh chair.  But, as PP have said, putting him in a small tub full of warm water made all the difference in the world.  We seriously started with dish pans...and then he got too big and we too have the FP whale tub and he loves it.
  • I agree with the PP who said the running water scared their LO. Also, I make sure to frequently pour the warm water over DS with a cup to keep his belly and chest/arms and legs warm. He did hate it when he was under a month old, but now he seems to enjoy it.
  • Have a shower first and let the bathroom get warm and steamy so it is not so cold. DD needs the water to be at the highest of the safe range, and the cloth on the tummy worked for her (as well as getting the room warm). Also turn down your A/C so it is not so cold while he is naked. We also do her body first them wrap her in her towel and then do her hair over the side of the tub, or do her hair last in the tub so her head isn't wet (that's where they lose their body heat). Also, make sure you have everything ready before you undress baby so they aren't naked for any longer than necessary.
