The dr said she did it to me today and it didn't hurt me anymore than any other internal. But I have a friend that said it hurt really bad...maybe it depends on your pain tolerance.
My OB tried to do it today... and it hurt like hell. I asked her to stop. Maybe I'm too sissy, but I couldn't take it. My 2cm dilated and 50% effaced cervix was, apparently, way too sensitive. No stripped membranes for me.

Better progress than me...I'm 1 cm and 50% effaced. Oh well, the news actually helped me to remember to relax and enjoy the rest of the pregnancy...to stop looking for ever effing sign and contraction!
When I had it done it was so bad I almost passed out. It was up there with the most painful experiences I have ever had. Way worse than childbirth (unmedicated). It seems to vary a lot from woman to woman and I haven't figured out why it is so painful for some and a piece of cake for others.

I've been like that since my first internal at 37 weeks. I knew I was in it for the long haul... And I have yet to have a single effing contraction!
My Dr. tried to strip my membranes today. I am only 1 cm so it hurt like hell! Way worse than an internal! Oh and I haven't had any contractions yet at all. Maybe if I had some progress it wouldn't have been so painful?
IMO it probably has a lot to do with your progress and the position of your cervix. Mine is really posterior so if she was even able to reach it (she can't) it would be painful for her to get back there.
