3rd Trimester

Does your baby ever twitch/spasm?

Her movements are usually pretty "normal" - a bunch of kicks and punches when she gets going but occasionally it's like she's crazy twitching for a few seconds and it kind of freaks me out - almost like a spasm/seizure for just a second. I don't really think it's a seizure but just giving an example of how intense the "twitching" is. What kind of movement causes THAT (does she have a speed bag in there??) and does anyone else experience it or should I be more concerned?

Re: Does your baby ever twitch/spasm?

  • I feel this every so often. It's like something is vibrating in there! I'm not sure what it is but I always make sure I feel "normal" movement after that happens. I keep forgetting to ask my OB about it.

  • Most of my baby's movements are "twitchy". I have never thought it was anything to be concerned about.

  • Um yes!!! Exactly! I actually DO call them her little seizure's! LOL!

I asked 3 other pregnant friends about these and they looked at my like I was crazy! But my sister told me she had them too and it made me feel much better!

I SO wish I could see what she did when that happened too! I have no idea what causes it!

  • I have this type of feeling, but have always thought it was more of a spasm of my uterus or a little spasm that the baby was having, but have never been worried.
  • I think it's hiccups.
  • I get the seizures too. It's crazy lol. And it is not hiccups.
  • YES!  I've totally had that happen here and there.  I'm sure its normal.

I have felt them too occassionally, it could be like a startle reflex.

  • Thanks ladies, and thanks to the poster who described it as a spasm, that's the word I was looking for! I just edited my post. It is definitely NOT hiccups - it's not little individual spasms but rather sudden really quick crazy movement like she's freaking out. I hadn't thought that it could be my ute spasming, will need to look that up. It just happened really high so I don't think it's the ute.

  • I asked my doctor about this last week, it has happened only once and I was afraid the baby was having a seizure or something. He had heard of this before and said it is most likely the baby's moro reflex which is their startling reflex. It's totally fine, nothing to worry about!

  • I've felt this a few times too - like a seizure is the only way to describe it. Nothing like hiccups, or anything else. It did freak me out, but he always moves normally again afterwards, so hopefully it's fine. I'd find it hard to believe it was my ute twitching - it's much too strong. Glad to hear others have experienced the same thing though.
  • I've felt it, and found it so disturbing at first that I talked to my OB about it.   She said it's totally normal.
  • I just felt an intense one tonight.  I asked him if he was ok and he gave me a big kick.

  • Yeah she does.  I'm sure it's normal.. I always think she got a chill or something, or maybe she had a dream that she was falling haha..

  • I get these too! There are crazy to watch my whole belly shakes like there is a blender or something in there, I call them little siezers too!

  • It's just the baby's immature nervous system. Nothing to worry about. Smile
