2nd Trimester

Anyone else HATE brushing their teeth now?

In the 1st trimester, it was almost impossible for me to brush my teeth. The act of brushing plus the bubbles and foaming action of the toothpaste made me gag every time. I threw up twice during the teeth brushing. I've tried a few different toothpastes, but it's definitely a texture and mouth-feel problem. I thought it would improve, but it hasn't at all. I also haven't been to the dentist in over a year and I'm supposed to go soon, but I can't bring myself to make the appt because I don't want to spend an hour gagging and vomiting during a routine teeth cleaning, which was never a problem for me before.?

Ah, the joys of pregnancy, lol!!?

  • I gag every time I brush! When I was pg with DD I gagged every time until she was born! Totally grosses DH out!

  • Just wait, it gets even better.  If you haven't had it happen already, your gums get much more sensitive during pregnancy too.  Every time I floss, I look like a vampire from all the blood.  I've had 2 cleanings, one the day before I found out I was pregnant and one about 2 weeks ago.  The most recent one was not pleasant!
  • Me, me!!  I throw up probably half of the times that I brush...  stomach acid.  It can get so bad sometimes that I can't stop myself from throwing up and have to lay down for a few minutes to fight the urge to throw up.  It's not pleasant!  I find that it is actually getting worse for me as time goes on.

    *sniff sniff*  :(

This.  When I floss or brush my teeth I almost always swallow blood right now.

I had a cleaning today..needless to say almost every 30 seconds she had to stop, rinse and suction.  My whole mouth hurts as well, I don't know how I'm supposed to get any cavities filled without being able to take ibuprofen afterwards.  This cleaning still hurts at it was at 10am

  • I feel for you. I gagged or threw up pretty much every time I brushed my teeth when I was in 1st tri. I'm lucky enough that mine has gotten much, much better now.
  • Yeah, I'm not a fan lately either.  I keep feeling like I'm going to throw up, and I sometimes gag a bit.  I have managed to rinse my mouth out well and "deep breath" my way out of it before anything actually comes up so far..

No wonder they say pregnant women have more gum/teeth problems, it's torture to brush!! LOL!

Yeah, I pretty much throw up ...something...everytime I brush. I stopped eating first because it became pointless. Of course, now I often bring up stomach acid instead. I always was a gagger anyway, but this is really annoying.

  • I have gagged everytime I brush for my whole pregnancy so far. I find it gets worse later at night than in the morning. I went for a cleaning a few weeks ago and thought it would be horrible. I warned the hygenist that I may need to rinse often, but she was so great. I didn't have any problems and with that suction thing, I was fine!  My gums definitely bleed and did not before I was pregnant. She said it gets worse when you breastfeed too!   Lovely! Big Smile
