gender at NT scan? (copied from 1st tri)

I've noticed quite a few of the girls over on 1st tri found out with some certainty what gender they are having at the NT scan around 12-13 weeks. Just curious as to how many of you did, figured it was probably a better question for here.

  • Our u/s tech told us at one view that she thought it was a boy, but then when she looked again she said she had no idea. It's something about the angle of the genitalia at that age, because it boy and girl genitals look very similar at that point in pregnancy. She did tell me that when the baby is in the right position and she's told parents what she THINKS it is at that stage, that she's only been wrong twice! Pretty crazy that there is so much to be seen when they're so small!

    Our tech refused to guess.
  • Our tech said she would be guessing so didn't say anything at all!
  • If I even got to have an NT scan and the tech decided to tell me the sex, I wouldn't have much faith in what they tell me. The genitalia are not developed enough at that point to know for sure. I think it's as good as using the old wive's tale of determining gender off heartbeat rate.

Our tech told us that at their practice, with extremely experienced techs, their accuracy rate for gender at 12 weeks (NT) is about 50%, so they don't do it ;)

  • My tech spent about 10-15 minutes trying to find the genitals because baby was moving so much. She was finally able to get a perfect angle and it was CLEARLY a boy. But only at 13 weeks is it identifyable. Any sooner, they look too similar. I was 13w 2d when I had mine. She told me she was 100% sure and confident or else she would not have told me. She was correct.
  • Our tech said that they will not guess at that point :(

  • I was given a guess, but we were unable to confirm with an u/s at 16w.  It makes me think the gender may actually be the opposite of the NT guess, but I won't find out for a couple more weeks.

  • My doctor said he was 99% sure we were having a girl this time due to the angle of (something).  We'll find out for sure on 8/20.
