Opinions on my hip pain..? WDYT?

Long story short (i'll try), a couple months ago on my co-ed softball team i was running and just did something to my hip, it just just dull pain that came and went about once or twice a week for about a month.

Well then this past month that pain turned into sharp jabbing/shooting pain about twice a week, usually only when i would be sitting and then stand.

Well, then this past week it's been hurting every single day, increasing the pain and frequency with each day..

It bothers me but I'm one of those people that hate to go to the dr's for something minor like this. I was going to mention it at my next OB appt since I would be there anyways but thats not until Aug 24th.. I'm afraid it might be something more serious that I'm thinking, and that it might get worse as I go further with my pregnancy-- and worse my hip pain interfering with labor!!!!

The pain is not exactley my HIP, it's kinda lower like below be hip in the middle of my right cheek, lol but I call it my hip because it seems to be related to that but maybe i'm complaining about the wrong body part...

Anybody have pain like this before? What did it end up being? Do you think I should make an earlier appointment or just wait and see what my OB thinks?

Any opinions?

Thanks for letting me vent this!

(sorry so long)

  • I think you should go to the dr or at least talk to the nurse before they close.  It is always better to be safe than sorry.

  • It could be your sciatic nerve. It runs down the middle of both cheeks. (Obviously one on each side, lol)

  • Is it literally in your butt cheek, down your leg? Maybe even in your heel? If so, it's probably sciatic nerve pain. I've been having it for a couple weeks (which is kinda early I guess) on and off. I talked to my doctor about it and he confirmed that's what it was. He said to call if it was getting worse and that he would send me to physical therapy. I guess it's something that can get pretty painful later in pregnancy. HTH!

  • This pain could also be from your sacroiliac joint.  This joint stretches during pregnancy, allowing the baby more room in your pelvis, which can be uncomfortable.  Mine have been sore since about week 8, and for some reason it was just the left side until about week 17.

That's what a co-worker thought.  Recently I'll just be standing there doing nothign and all of a sudden the worse pain ever just stbas me and I almost collapse and in a few minutes it goes away, every once in awhile it shoots up to the middle of my back.

it is like in my butt cheek, but not down my leg.. it goes up rather than down..

maybe i should call my PCP up? or my OB? lol thats my next question!

i don't think this is it, i had a specific moment where i "injured" myself.. and its not "uncomfortable", it almost brings me to tears when the pain shoots.. believe me i'm not a whiner lol

Is it *right* in the middle of the cheek and very, very deep?  If so, it sounds like your piriformis muscle, which is easy to injure.  Unfortunately, I think that stretching and ice/heat are about the only things that help.  When I was running a lot I had a ton of piriformis pain on my right side.  Google piriformis stretch and see if those stretches help.  I also just googled and saw that "piriformis syndrome" can be brought on by pregnancy. If you had an injury, it could be made worse given you are now pregnant. GL and definitely ask your doc!

  • Yah I have it.. my OBGYN told me to get a belly brace thing and is referring me to see a DO (doctor of osteopathy).  I'll see him on Monday.

My hips hurt to the point I can't walk.  It's not baby related, other than the extra weight from LO and the changes in the muscle due to pregnancy.. so its not hurting the baby or something like that if that makes sense.
